Their assistance in the various catering projects at the Lions Centre enables the club to raise much of the money used in its community projects. At their September 25th meeting, the Lions Club members received their latest contribution from the Lioness Club's fund-raising effort. Canada Belgian artist Carl Brenders will visit McCrim- mon's Art Gallery in Newcastle Newcastle Village on Thursday, October 19th. McCrimmon's has been selected to host this famous European artist during his North American tour. He will be at the gallery between between seven p.m. and 10 p.m. Carl Brenders has spent most of his 49 years developing developing his work to the point where he is one of the world's foremost wildlife painters. In describing his work, Mr. Brenders points out that nature is already beautiful and already perfect. It is this kind of perfection that he attempts to capture by careful attention to detail and realism. His works start out os pencil sketches, are then drawn in watercolors and painted in gouache. He does a great deal of work in miniatures, miniatures, but other paintings measure two by three feet, A major original by Brenders now commands a price in the range of $20,000 to $30,000. Medical Officer Plans to Retire Dr. Jean Gray, Durham Region's medical officer of health, is retiring. Dr. Gray attended her last regional council meeting last week and heard a number number of thank yous and wishes wishes of luck from members of the council. One member, Councillor Margaret Shaw from Oshawa, said she was a member of the board of health when Dr. Gray was first hired. She said the board had never had a woman in that osition before and was rc- uctant to hire her. Councillor Shaw said she lobbied to have Dr. Gray hired.
