I 22 The Canadian Statesman, Bowman ville, October 18,1989 Hobnobbing with Harvey bv Harvey Malcolm Ode to Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is traditionally traditionally the time of the year to give thanks for all the good things that have come our way during the past year. This is the time to kill the fatted calf or more specifically specifically the fatted turkey <ànd share it with family and friends. Sure, perhaps the year hasn't brought all the good things we had hoped it would, but conversely it hasn't done all the bad things it was capable of doing. doing. We in Canada have possibly possibly one of the highest standards standards of living in the world -and still crave more. Not only is our country one of the most opulent, but also at this time of year, one of the most picturesoue. Our hard maples, indige nous only to Ontario, provide provide a panorama of arboreal splendour unmatched by any other areas in the world. This year our kaleidoscope kaleidoscope of colours has been unparalleled unparalleled by any we can recall. recall. Unfortunately the duration of their magnificence magnificence is of such a brief duration. duration. Already the process of defoliation has commenced as leaf by leaf they float gently to the earth. Soon the trees will be standing stark naked in their skeletal drabness. drabness. But enough of beauty and or ugliness. Although we get depressed depressed at times with our extremes of climate,. our weather is seldom if ever boring. Tornadoes are the exception rather than rule Hurricane Hazel which created such chaos in 1954 Happy Birthday Mom! 39 Again? With Love is now only a bitter memory, a conversation piece, so to speak. All in all, we in Canada, Canada, particularly in this part of the country have still a great deal to tie thankful for. Sometimes we take our flowery meadows, chanting birds, flowing fountains, rustling rustling grain and colourful hills and valleys too much for granted. Perhaps it is time we gave thanks for all we have before we lose it. Sorority Meets After Summer by Gayle Stevenson Xi Zeta Lambda Sorority has resumed its meetings after after a long summer recess.
