Belleville. After the welcome and invocation invocation from members of the Belleville Toastmasters Club, it was time for Table Topics. Table Topics Master Mary Leggatt took Hallowe'en Hallowe'en as her theme. A representative representative of each of the 10 clubs present was asked to answer a variety of questions questions including: why are black cats so unlucky?; what happens if you refuse to "treat" when the costumed children come around?: why is it always cold and rainy on Hallowe'en night? Thus Toastmasters were given the opportunity to test their creative and/or dramatic skills. The ability to speak extemporaneously is a desirable desirable skill in professional and private life, as we never know when we may be called upon to "say a few words". This contest involves the same skills as are involved in the spontaneous one- minute speeches, only these are two minutes in length. The first speaker, Nicole Nicole Wegschneider of Belleville Belleville opened her talk with a song about her "favourite things", one of them being peanut butter. She admitted to being a "peanut buttera- holic" tne day she substituted substituted peanut butter balls for croutons on her salad! Toastmaster Tim Crookall of Oshawa entertained us with his guitar while telling us in a southern drawl why he likes to play country music. He assured us that you don't need to be able to sing in order order to be a country music artist, and that you could better if you caught a Toastmaster Crookall won the Best Speaker Award and will go to compete compete in the District Contest. We wish him good luck. Contests are an area in which a large number of Toastmasters are reluctant to participate. But contests offer a challenge which missing at the club level. Even if one does not leave with a trophy, one has the sense of accomplishment that only comes from teaching teaching one's butterflies to "fly in formation." OBITUARY Dorothy May Pearce A resident at 56 Concession Concession Street East, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, for 53 years, Dorothy May Pearce, aged 82, died on September 29, 1989, in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Bowmanville. She had been critically critically ill five months. Born and educated at Leskard, she was the daughter daughter of George and Ada Ball. On October 31, 1936 she was married to Henry Pearce. A homemaker she had retired retired 19 years ago from the farming and dairy business on the Henry property on Concession Street. She was a member of Trinity United Church and for many years was the pianist at Leskard United Church. She was an expert at growing flowers and plants. The Reverend Frank Lockhart officiated at the funeral funeral services held October 2, at the Morris Funeral Chapel, Bowmanville.
