The third penod saw some close plays in both ends. 401 Esso put the pressure on during the final shift but were unable to narrow the gap, and the game ended with a 4-2 score for Remax. Despite the loss for Esso several positive signs have been emerging lately. The defensive work of Ted Fitzgerald Fitzgerald and Ian Robinson has improved steadily since the beginning of the year, providing providing good support for Brandon Renton in the 401 Esso net. In the forward ranks, Tim Bydal has shown increasing hustle and this aggressiveness paid off in a goal last game. John Bastas, a first year player is improving improving with each game. WHITBY, ONTARIO by Brad Kelly It's a well-known fact that Russian kids rise out of bed at the crack of dawn to go to a hockey practice. Here in Bowmanville, we have some kids who do the same. The only difference is that the water on which these kids practice isn't frozen. The Newcastle Aquatic Club was started by Gord Maxwell and Carol Gonder, who were operating a summer summer swim team. Interest began began to grow, so Gord and Carol decided to expand the club to a competitive team that would work out over the winter months. The team started with 15 members, members, and is now in its fourth year of operation. The club's home is located at the Newcastle Newcastle Fitness Centre, which is adjacent to the Bowmanville Bowmanville High School. Bob Mack, who has been with the club since the bo- f inning, is currently serving is second year ns club president. president. Bob also doubles as one of the assistant coaches. "A lot of kids are beginning beginning to turn to competitive swimming ns a sport," explained explained Bob. "It's one of the few sports available for kids that has a very low risk of injury, and doesn't require a parent to spend a lot of money money on equipment. Once the parents get involved, they really become hooked on the sport." The club has a membership membership of 50. This includes 35 novice and 15 senior swimmers swimmers who range in ago from 6-18. The chib also has a masters swim team which includes swimmers 18 years of ago and over. Bob claims that this division is one of the fastest growing within the sport. The club begins its season season in early September, and finishes at the end of June. They practice six days a week, with the seniors taking taking the early mornings, and the novices practising after school. On average, tne club will enter a local swim meet every four to six weeks. Gail Arnott and her husband, husband, Kerry, followed their daughters into the swim club and are now in their third year ns head coaches. Some of the senior swimmers swimmers help Gail and Kerry coach the novice group. On most clubs, the coaches are paid. Gail and Kerry are an exception, as they volunteer their time. "I coach because I really enjoy it," stated Gail. "The best part for me is watching the kids' attitudes change, and seeing an improvement in their level of swimming." Gail and Kerry have three members of tne team who are swimming at a provincial provincial level. Their daughters, daughters, Tracey and Tara, compete compete in the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke, and Toby Limebeer competes in the 100 and 200 metre butterfly. butterfly. To bo at the provincial provincial level, a swimmer must meet the provincial standards standards which are based on the 30th fastest time recorded recorded in the previous year in Ontario. Some of the senior swimmers swimmers turn their hard work into part-time jobs. Those who are at the Red Cross level are able to lifeguard, and also teach lessons to younger swimmers. Yolanda Jones is a veteran veteran with the club, ns she is entering her fourth year as a competitive swimmer. Bob tried to explain that an addiction addiction to chlorine is what keeps the kids coming back, but Yolanda has a différant view. "To be successful you have to be dedicated, and have a love for the sport," she said. "It's satisfying when you see an improvement improvement in your results at swim meets. That's the best part." To offset the cost of pool rental, coaches expenses, and banquets, the club generates generates money from various fund-raising activities. Along with a grant from the Town of Newcastle, the club receives money from yard and bake sales, swim-a- thons, and by selling kitchen wrap. The club is currently without a sponsor, but will gladly listen to any offers. Plans are in the works for the club to host its first swim meet sometime in late February or early March. They are looking at holding it on a Sunday, inviting four area clubs to compete. Approximately Approximately 100 competitors will be involved. The club is still accepting registrations for this year. Anyone who would like to bo involved with this close-knit roup, is asked to call Bob "nek at 623-9365.
