Heritage House Atoms Are Saltfleet Champions Part of the Secret to Eagles' Success by Brad Kelly In the entertainment world, the name Glen Campbell Campbell means country and western music. In thé Jr. "C" circuit, the name Glyn Campbell means scoring points. Lots and lots of points. Glyn Campbell is a S'il", 170 pound centreman for the Bowmanville Eagles. A left handed shot, Glyn wears' number 18, and is one of two assistant captains. For two reasons, Glyn isn't hard to pick out on the ice. He is the only member on the team who wears a face shield, rather than a mask, and he spends much of each game with his arms extended high in the air celebrating Eagles' goals. Glyn has celebrated goals so often this year, that he sits on top of the league scoring race at the mid-way point of the season. A graduate of the Bowmanville Bowmanville minor hockey system, system, Glyn appeared in five All-Ontario Championship finals, winning three of them. But he claims that it wasn't until the last two years of minor hockey that he developed a scoring touch. "I remember Glyn as being being a small, fiesty, wiry kid in his minor hockey days," recalled Brian Taylor who coached Glyn for four years in minor hockey, and is now the head coach of the Eagles. Eagles. "If you check back over the records, you'll find that Glyn always had twice as many assists as goals." Glyn is completing his second year of Sports Administration Administration at Durham College. College. He hopes to enter the non-profit, or facility management management field upon graduating. graduating. His high school days were spent at Bowmanville. "The only varsity sport T played at high school was rugby," explained Glyn. "I really tried to concentrate on my studies. Grades were very important to me." Before joining the Eagles last year, Glyn played one Jug City Downs Lindsay J <On Friday evening, the team travelled to Lindsay, fçr a game against the Lindsay Lindsay All Star Team. Midway Midway through the opening period, period, starting goal keeper Jake Davis was called upon to face a Lindsay penalty shot. The score remained the same as the shot was kicked aside and the goalie was congratulated by his fellow fellow team mates. Immediately, Bowmanville Bowmanville went to work, and as their confidence in each other other grew so did the score, as they out worked and out passed their opponents while running up a 5-1 score. A day later the Jug City team were in Newcastle to face ],T-Mac Atoms in an exhibition exhibition game. Danny McDonald sent the selects into an early lead, scoring the only goal of the opening period unassisted unassisted at the thirty second mark. The Selects took a two goal lead at 1:35 of the second second period as again Danny McDonald scored with Andy Griffin drawing the assist. Ryan Bruce was called upon to make a number of difficult saves, before a shot from T-Mac's Richard Assen beat him at 4:30. The Selects again took a two goal lead with Chris McDonald opening the, scoring scoring and collecting the hat trick, 35 seconds into the final final period, again combining with Andy Griffin who drew the assist. The fifth Bowmanville goal came from the stick of the hard working Joel Osborne, Osborne, again assisted by Andy Griffin who collected three assists in the game. Liberty Bowl Youth Bowling program Director ■ Joan Murphy. "Glyn is a hard worker who plays the game with a lot of heart," described coach Taylor. "Even though he has a lot of points, Glyn isn't selfish, he's a team player." Glyn proved that statement statement to be true when asked where he developed his scoring scoring touch. Eouipment Manager Manager Rick Clarke tried to take the credit, since Glyn uses Rick's gloves for the games.- But Glyn passed the credit on to his teammates. "I couldn't do it without the help of my linemates Nick Dennis and Chris Shmyr. Some of it comes from hard work, but most of all it's a team effort." In a recent game against Lakefield, Glyn did his best to turn the opponents' goal into a "red light district". He helped light up the red goal light 12 times in that game, undoubtedly leaving a sunburn sunburn on the back of the goalie's goalie's neck. "That was the most points I've ever got in one game," he said, a big smile coming across Ms face. For now, Bowmanville sits on top of the Junior "C" standings, with their only tough competition coming from the Port Perry Mo- jacks. "I'm hopeful we can go all the way this year," said Glyn. "The way we are playing playing right now, I don't think there is a team in Ontario that can touch us." If that prediction comes true, Glyn will be given the opportunity to extend his arms high into the air once Not to celebrate more. an other goal, but to hoist another another All-Ontario Championship Championship trophy. Over the past weekend the Heritage House Atoms travelled to Stoney Creek to participate in the annual Saltfleet Minor Hockey Tournament of Champions.
