' if you guessed from the top of one the downhill runs at Kirby Ski Hill, you're right. But, judging from the number of skiers who use the hill, there's more than just great scenery at this location. location. The Oshawa Ski Club, which operates the Kirby Ski Hill, is home to 5,000 members. To become a member, member, you must wait your turn on a list which is 2000 names long. If you were to sign up today, chances are your name would come up for the 1991-92 season. For the recreational skier, skier, daily guest passes can be purchased, along with the rental of skis, boots, and poles. The Oshawa Ski Club began began full operations at Kirby in 1955. Prior to that, the club members skied at the Oshawa Golf Club, the Downsview Golf Club, and Raglan. The first night ski for the Club took place on January 6, 1939. Torches were used to light the hill. In 1955, the club sold family memberships for $10.00, and lifetime memberships memberships for $100.00. The lifetime memberships were used to help raise money for improvements to the Kirby ski hills. By 1958, the Club had built eight rope tows that would move skiers up the hill more quickly. In a pamphlet produced by the Oshawa Ski Club, World champion skier Nancy Greene was quoted as saying saying that "Oshawa was the only ski area in the world where you went up the hill faster than you could come down." Today, the Kirby Ski Hill has 26 runs and trails for experts and beginners, two chalets with cafeterias, a pro shop, racing and ski jumping jumping programs, arid loads more. Skiing opened for business on December 6 this year. During Christmas and March break, the ski hill will be open seven days a toeek. Christmas day will be the only day during these weeks when the hill will be closed. The ski hill is comprised of three different properties, totalling 300 acres. Forty acres of the property is ski- able. Dick Rutherford, who is the Property Manager at Kirby, estimates that he will work approximately 70 hours a week during peak periods. This doesn't include the endless hours he spends on call. Although the hours are long, being able to work outdoors keeps Dick going. Mention the possibility of mild weather to Dick, and watch him cringe. "The most disappointing part of the business is when you work hard all week, and on Friday a mild spell moves in, ruining skiing for the weekend, he says." Fortunately for Kirby, the invention of a snow making making machine helps ease the pain of a mild spell. Compressed air and water water is fed into the machines. Under 80 to 100 pounds of pressure, the water is broken broken down into tiny particles. The particles go through openings under pressure, and the heat from the particles particles is taken away by the force. The water freezes before before hitting the ground, making snow. Junior Citizen Winners Chosen The Ontario Community Newspaper Association has selected the Junior Citizen of the Year award-winners for 1989. One of the recipients this ear is Debra Surman, 18, of 'estleton. She was recognized for her quick thinking in saving the life of her young nephew in a near-fatal car accident. Realizing that the car would crash, she undid her seat belt and wrapped herself herself around the baby. In doing so, she was severely severely injured herself.
