The look, the scent, and the very feel of a natural tree are integral parts of the warm, homey atmosphere of our most festive season. season. To ensure this year that your tree adds more charm than needles to your Christmas decor, here are a few tips on buying the freshest tree you can find and how to keep it that way: SELECTION The most popular trees available to consumers in Ontario are Scots pine (medium length needles), spruce (short, sharp needles) needles) and balsam fir (soft, aromatic needles). Whatever Whatever your preference, pick a tree with strong green colour and a noticeable fragrance. To ensure your chosen tree is fresh, lift it a few inches off the ground then bang it down on the stump end. The outside needles should not fall off in great quantity, although although the inside ones shed naturally every year. If bent gently, an unfrozen unfrozen needle from a fresh tree should bend rather than break. CARE Store the tree in a sheltered but unheated area such as a porch or garage until ready to use. When you bring the tree indoors, cut about one inch off the butt end to open the tree stem and allow water intake. Place the tree in a stand that holds a generous generous supply of water and top it up daily. If the water water drops below the end of the trunk, the stem may re-seal itself and require a fresh cut. Keep the tree away from all sources of heat and drying including radiators, radiators, furnace ducts, television sets, fireplaces and windows with a direct direct exposure to the sun. Remove the tree within within 10-14 days. After that amount of time in a heated heated building, even the freshest tree will begin to dry out. SAFETY Ensure that all electric lights and connections are in good condition. Turn off lights when leaving your home or retiring retiring for the night. Never use combustible decorations or lighted candles on a fresh tree. The best protection for a tree is moisture. Because Because of its high moisture content, a fresh tree is naturally fire resistant and will remain so with a continuous supply of water. water.
