l » > The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, December 27,1989 11 Christmas a Little Bit Merrier at Hospital Christmas was made a little more merry for 18 people people at Memorial Hospital Bowmanville this year. : Last week, the Hospital Auxiliary at Memorial Hospital Hospital held their annual Christmas party for longterm longterm patients. Cake, refreshments, Kay Gain was happily surprised when this jolly person planted a kiss on her cheek and left a present for her at Memorial Hospital Bowmanville's Christmas Christmas party for long-term care patients. Santa Claus (played by Dr. Derry Hubbard) had gifts for all the patients. patients. Christmas music and a visit from the Jolly Old Elf himself himself were the order of the day as a little bit of Christmas Christmas was brought into the hospital ward. Dorothy Stewart, nurse manager for the medical rehabilitation rehabilitation unit, said the patients love the party each year. "It's done especially for them. It's important that they know they are cared fori' she said. The nurses on the floor indicate to the auxiliary what each patiént might like to receive as a gift for Christmas. They want the gifts to be something personal personal that the patient will like instead of something that could have been for anyone. The hospital auxiliary bought gifts for 44 patients this year and persuaded Santa Claus to arrive a little earlier than Christmas Eve to deliver them. The response to the party each year from the patients has been positive. Kay Cain, who has been in Memorial Hospital for a little over 16 years, enjoys the Christmas party every year. "It's just great, " she said. "Only in Bowmanville hospital hospital does it happen." "It's a wonderful home away from home," she added. added. Kay said the party definitely definitely brings a bit of Christmas Christmas cheer into the building. "I believe that if you're going to be happy at any time of the year, this is the time." Mrs. Stewart said there is a lot of work involved getting getting the patients up and dressed and into the physio room for the party. It in volves the co-operation of everyone on staff. "It's very much a team effort effort on everyone's part. Without each other we couldn't do it," she said. Twenty six patients are on the medical rehabilitation rehabilitation floor. The ones that didn't make it to the party weren't forgotten either. Santa Claus, after making making his first stop, toured the rest of the floor handing out presents to all the long-term patients. And then, because it is the season to be jolly, he continued his route by visiting visiting every patient in the hospital hospital and planted a little kiss on everyone's cheek. On Christmas Day, some of the patients were able to go home to be with their families. Three went out overnight while eight went out during the day. For those who remained in the hospital on Christmas Day, a free Christmas dinner dinner was provided for any guest the patient had. The physio room was turned into a dining room for the day to "make it as home like as we can" Mrs. Stewart said. A tremendous amount of planning and work was involved involved in preparing the Christmas party and getting the patients ready to go home on the holiday but, as Mrs. Stewart said, the bottom bottom line is it's good for the patient. "They enjoy it and the families enjoy having them," Mrs. Stewart added. And as Kay said about her 'Tiome away from home", "Without the staff and administration, administration, it wouldn't be as great."
