I I I 12 The Canadian Statesman, Bowman ville, December 27,1989 Food Drive Helps Salvation Army A major upset took id at the place this weekend at the Bow- manville House League Pee Wee tournament when the mighty Mr. Sub were beaten in the "A" Championship finals finals by the underdog Checkers Checkers Variety team. Checkers have been seeking seeking revenge since taking a 7- 1 thrashing by Mr. Sub in their first meeting earlier this year. After giving up 3 goals in a 7-3 win over Dyk- stras Deli in the first game of the tournament, it didn't look as though Checkers would make the A finals against the Sub, since total goals against would be important important in determining the final match-up. Checker's Get Revenge ers coaches made it clear to their players that if they wanted a crack at the Sub and the A championship, thev had to cut down their goals-against average. The boys responded by posting a 6-0 shut-out against Glen Stewart in the second game and another shut-out, this time 3-0 against MacKenzie Park in the third game. Philip Cunningham in goal came up big when needed and the solid defence work of Derek Unsworth, Robert Hampsey, Brandon Meadows Meadows and Scott Millar played outstanding hockey, holding Glen SteWart to only 2 shots on net. The A championship game itself was a classic, and the crowd really got into the act. Scott McGregor got out of a sick bed to lead Checkers with a gutsy 2 goal performance, while Bruce Hamilton notched a goal and an assist. The hard skating whirling-devrish Ryan Leppert assisted on all three goals. Further assists went to David Knoop and Jeff Johnson.
