WHTTBY, ONTARIO M.P.P. Sam Takes Issue with Hydro Safety Standards Mr. Cureatz: Today Ontario Ontario Hydro is requesting permission to increase power power output at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station which, of course, is in my riding of Durham East. With the brownout situation we are facing, Ontario Hydro and others might argue that it is prudent to get Darlington Darlington going quickly. However, we should not let expediency get in the way of safety. The town of Newcastle, which is my own hometown, which is responsible for dealing with any emergencies emergencies arising at the Darlington Darlington plant, has not yet approved approved a complete fire plan for the plant. Until it does, Ontario Hydro should not be ■ allowed to increase power, no matter what the external pressures are. The safety of the residents residents living in the surrounding surrounding area should not be jeopardised jeopardised because Ontario Hydro has not had the foresight foresight nor has this govern ment, to supply adequate power to the rest of the province province when it gets cold. Ontario Ontario Hydro and the Solicitor General's office are not taking taking the town's concerns seriously. seriously. If the local fire chief says he is not satisfied that public safety is adequately addressed, his opinion should be respected. The corporation is trying to push an agenda that could jeopardize public safety. safety. Using the excuse of brownouts to speed up the licensing licensing process shows Hydro Hydro and this Liberal administration administration have not planned adequately enough, as I have indicated in this portfolio portfolio many times over the lost two years. They have been dragging their feet in terms of ensuring that Ontario residents residents and industry will be supplied with an adequate amount of electricity. Here we have a situation facing brownouts which indicates they have not planned.
