1 V Mr. Submarine Captures Oshawa 4 A' Championship The Mr. Sub PeeWee team travelled to Oshawa to play in the recent N.A.S.C. Checkers Tournament. The Sub boys entered into this tournament hoping to end the year on a high, and they weren't disappointed as they captured the "A" Championship. Championship. On Wednesday, December December 27, the Sub boys faced off against Cedar Ridge. This was an easy game for Sub as they skated to an 8-0 win. Clayton Guest scored the first goal as he picked up a loose puck in front of the Cedar Ridge net. Nine seconds seconds later, David Vernon, notched the 2nd goal. The forwards all played tough, with Brian Thornton, Justin Vance and Ryan Kohn keeping the pressure on Glen Stewart's defence. The Wood- view team started the game with their big guns and this paid big dividends as they notched the first goal of the game. Clayton Guest tied up the game with Les McCrory and Rick Swale picking up the assist. Rob scored to give the Sub boys the lead as he broke in alone on the Wood- view goalie. Rob notched another another goal , for the Sub boys to give them a three goal lead. With the Sub boys playing playing a man short, Rob picked up the puck to obtain his hat trick. Four seconds later, Woodview scored their power power play goal. The Woodview team scored again to make the game close. Darren Donohue Donohue then scored on a pass from Chad Veinot. In the dying seconds of the 2nd period, Rob Watson, notched nis 4th goal of the game. In the third period, the Oshawa parents got on the referees, this led to the Sub boys picking up many Questionable Questionable penalties. Wood- view scored two goals late in the 3rd period to register the final score 6 to 5 for Mr. Sub. Les McCrory and Chad Veinot played great defence when tne Sub boys had to play a man short. The penal- S ' killing up front of Darren onohue and Rick Swale was also excellent. The coaches were happy to have Tim Foiret back on defence. The coach would like to thank all the parents who helped on the bench and in the time box. The Sub boys enter the new year with a record of 31 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, January 3,1990 15 ^ Close lo 100 Teams Bowl in Twosome Heritage House Atoms Capture 4 A' Crown in Christmas Classic Heritage House Atoms played their first game of the Schickedanz Christmas Classic against the Peterborough Peterborough Miss Diana Petes at the Darlington Sports Centre Centre on December 27, 1989. The score was tied 1-1 after one period. The visitors took the early lead but Greg McMurter knotted the score on an ùnassisted goal. The second period ended 3-3 as the teams each scored 2 goals. Toro goals by Chris Steele from Paul Lavallee and Sommer West from Kevin Kevin Pickell with only 14 seconds seconds left in the period. At the start of the third period each team had several several opportunities before the Petes took a 1 goal lead at the mid way mark of the period period - Toros then took charge as Kevin Pickell made an end to end rush and tucked a shot neatly behind the Pete's goaltender. Paul Lavallee Lavallee let a blast go from the top of the circle that beat the goalie cleanly for our fifth goal and finally, with the Petes goalie on the bench in favour of an extra attacker, Travis Laughlin moved over centre, gave Dwayne Desjardins a perfect pass and Dwayne made no mistake scoring our 6th goal. Final score 6-4 in favour favour of Toros. In our second game, Toros Toros came out flying, and in a rather one-sided contest defeated defeated Saltfleet 9-0. Paul Lavallee Lavallee led the attack with one goal and four assists, while Greg McMurter scored three along with one assist. Other Toros scores by Brent Strand one goal, one assist, Dwayne Desjardins one goal, one assist, Travis Laughlin two assists, Kevin Pickell, Chris Steele and Sommer West one goal each while Matt Brake and Steve Brinkman each picked up assists. David Yellowlees recorded the shut-out. Goulding Park Rangers from the MTHL were our third opponents and Toros jumped into an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Greg McMurter from Brent Strand and Steve Brink- man. Goulding Park tied the score early in the second, however, Toros came back with two short handed goals late in the period to take a 3-1 lead after two, Paul Lavallee Lavallee from Derek Lange and Kevin Pickell and Dwayne Desjardins from Greg McMurter. After a scoreless first period period Steve Brinkman moved in from his defense position and backhanded a shot past the Stouffville goalie. Later in the second Dwayne Desjardins Desjardins blasted a low shot for a shorthanded goal, assisted assisted by Kevin Pickell. Stouffville came back quickly quickly on the power play to score what turned out to be their only goal of the game. The score stayed 2-1 until late in the third period when Paul Lavallee scored an unassisted unassisted goal that turned out to be the clincher. Final score Toros 3, Stouffville 1. The team played good, solid hockey throughout the tournament. Goal tenders Mike Rowland and David Yellowlees with the help of strong defense from Kevin Pickell, Derek Lange, Matt Brake and Steven Brink- man, allowed a total of six goals in four games. Shoppers possible good chances were broken up by excellent defensive plays which included, checking at our blue line and clearing the puck from our zone by Jay Henderson and Philip Hopkins.
