The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, January 10,1990 11 401 Esso Wins 'C Title Bowmanville Boxer is Learning the Ropes of Fighting Nick Rupa is climbing the ladder of success on his way to a top ten ranking in the world of professional boxing. Pictured above on the undercard of a Pernell by Brad Kelly Nick Rupa, of Bowmanville, Bowmanville, is a long way from home but close to his dream. You see, Nick is a professional professional boxer who has visions of a world welterweight title being placed around his waist. Virginia Beach is where Whittacker fight on April 30, Nick scored a TKO in the third round. Nick is learning the ropes of the professional fight game. Under the watchful eye of trainer George Benton and manager Lou Duva, Nick has compiled a perfect 7-0 record in the welterweight (147 pound) division. Lou Duva should be a familiar' familiar' name to fight fans. He was the head coach of the American Boxing Team that competed at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Angeles. "The people in Virginia have been straight up, and nice to me. Lou always knows what his fighters are up to. I don't know how he finds out, but he does," explained explained Nick. "Lou tries to keep us focused on what we're there (in Virginia) for, and that's to stay fit and keep winning. George Benton acts as Nick's trainer and technical coach in the gym. Lou Duva sets up the matches, and promotes his upcoming fights. Nick's mom, Sherry, feels that Nick is in good hands. "I've been down to Virginia, Virginia, and the people who look after Nick seem honest, and taken with him. They feel that he has the ability to be a champ someday." Like every concerned mother, Sherry worries about her son. "I call him every day," she admitted, with a huge smile. The Rupa family have been residents in Bowmanville Bowmanville since 1973. Nick has two brothers: Tony, who attends attends the University of Utah, and Dane, who is a student at George Brown College. His sister, Vivica, is the manager at Leisure Lady in Oshawa, while Sherry manages the Bowmanville Bowmanville branch. His father is an employee at General Motors in Osnawa. The Esso boys came out and worked hard in an effort to make it two in a .row. The St. Andrew team took a one goal lead at the mid-way point of the first period, after after some prolonged pressure in the 401 end. The 401 boys came back and hemmed St. Andrew in late in the period, but were unable to score. St. Andrew went ahead 4- 0 before Scott MacKay, with an unassisted goal, got the Esso team on the score- board. Despite several outstanding outstanding defensive plays by Trevor Wright, strong support support from defencemen Ted Fitzgerald, Ian Robinson and Scott Lambert, and steady goaltending from Brandon Renton, 401 Esso was still unable to hold back the strong St. Andrew squad. With the score at 5-1 Esso pulled their goaltender in an effort to score their second goal, thereby increasing increasing their tournament point total. However, they were unsuccessful and St. Andrew Andrew went on to win the game 8-1. In their third game of the tournament, on Sunday, 401 Esso faced J&J Sharpening from Bowmanville.
