v New Life for Dr. Keith Slemon Dr. Keith Slemon is thanked by Bowmanville Rotary Club President, Pat Mo- thersill, for his inspiring talk on his recovery from cancer. Dr. Slemon presented this talk to Rotarians and guests at the Port Darlington Marina recently. Many of the guests had been guided into the world by his capable hands and were there to celebrate his victory. Dr. Slemon during this ordeal. ordeal. And he lived to tell the tale. - It is a tale of courage, determination, determination, love, hope and triumph. Last year, Dr. Slemon heard tne those fateful words: "You have cancer." He talked about his experiences experiences at a meeting of the Bowmanville Rotary Club on Thursday, January 11, when he was the afternoon's guest speaker. Dr. Slemon is also a longstanding member of the Bowmanville Rotary Club. After being diagnosed, he immediately went to Toronto Toronto to undergo tests to see what could be done. Luckily, the disease had been caught in time and his case was operable. operable. After the operation, his wife, Jeanne, was waiting for him to wake up. She was able to lay to rest one of his greatest fears and her first words "no colostomy" brought him great peace of mind. , The operation was a success, success, but the. onslaught., of complications caused him almost almost unbearable pain and nearly his life. After the operation, an abscess appeared which caused septicemia in the blood stream. This, in turn, caused irregular heart rhythms and ultimately a thrombosis, which affected the left side of his body. He required surgery again. He survived and rallied. Suffice it to say, this courageous courageous man has been an example example of courage to all who know him. Rotarian Ken Hockin, a life-long friend, and the entire entire Hockin family provided much-needed support for stintingly upon Dr. Slemon and his family during his illness illness encouraged him and bolstered his courage. Dr. Slemon had nothing but the highest of praise to shower upon two nurses, Chris Kooy, Director of Nursing and Marion Tink, Manager of Emergency, both of Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville Bowmanville for all of their desperately desperately needed help. "These nurses are vastly underrated underrated and underpaid. They were loyal, steadfast and true when I needed them the most." he said. In addition, Dr. Slemon paid tribute to the loyalty and organizational ability of his office manager, Gloria Badour. "When I returned to the office it was as if I'd never never been away. She managed it so well. She juggled the time of five doctors to keep the office going." Dr. Slemon is, in spite of his recent trial, a very lucky man.'He is alive to realize how much esteem his fellow ,Rotarians have for him. He is alive to realize that he made no mistake when he married his lovely lady, Jeanne. He is alive to watch his grandchildren play. He is alive to thank everyone who has come to mean so much to him through the years and in this time of crisis. crisis. Most of all, he is alive. There was also one Rotarian Rotarian birthday. Earl Wolffs birthday was suitably acknowledged acknowledged during the meeting. A number of Rotarians' Rotarians' wives were among the guests in attendance at last week's meeting. Several of the guests had been brought into the world by Dr. Slemon Slemon and were glad to be there , to pay tribute to his courage ana rejoice with him upon his recovery. Also, there was news of another triumph in the worldwide brotherhood of Rotarians: the first Rotary meeting to be held behind the Iron Curtain took place in a Budapest doctor's home recently. There were 25 members in attendance. Without a doubt, there's good news for Rotarians facing facing a new decade. Eldad U.C.W. Holds First Meeting of '90 The January meeting of Eldad U.C.W. was held Monday, Monday, January 10 at the church. Pat Best was the hostess. President Jean Taylor welcomed everyone and opened with a poem "To Leave the Old," the hymn "This is the Day", and the U.C.W. purpose. Lois Yellowlees. •7 th Tyrone Ladies Meet in January A smaller group of ladies than normal gathered in the Community Centre for our first meeting of 1990 on January 8th. Blanche Jones took her chair for the group and asked Eileen Blackburn to take the secretaiy's notes for this meeting. Blanche opened with a reading "Where have the Echoes Gone?" that had been sent to Betty Roth along with a Christmas Card. This was about a young man headed for the Grist Mill in Haydon with his team of horses and sleighs, with the musical string of bells (nearly everyone everyone had) on the team, driving driving down the Haydon rbad from the 10th concession. He stopped at his grandmother's grandmother's house - now Betiy and John Roth's. The reading reading brought back memories and was much enjoyed when received by the Roths. Secretary's report was read and approved. Barb Walsh agreed to send out cards again this year and asks that people let her know when a card should be sent. Wendy Bourgeous was asked and agreed to attend to having' the fire extinguishers extinguishers inspected. The catering committee agreed to attend to lunch if needed for funerals. We hope sincerely this will not be needed this year. Roll Call was answered by - your New Year's Resolution. Resolution. The group of the month will again attend to getting gifts for newly-weds or to those who have resided in Haydon for several years ana have moved away. A paper was passed around to choose the month you would prefer to act as the group. We have February, February, November and December December to fill - Secretary would be pleased to hear from you if you'll fill one of those months. We had made plans last October to have a February outing for our members to go to the Oshawa Little Theatre. It was moved by Barb W. and 2nd by Gerlin- da Haunstein to nave the club pay for the Theatre tickets at $6.50. The evening we chose was February 8th - show at 8 p.m. Wendy B. agreed to get tlje tickets. This motion was unanimously unanimously agreed to. After much discussion, Betty R. and Gerlinda H. agreed to loôk fpr. a type of quilt we agreed on and to use their own discretion as to color. It was moved by Jan M. and 2nd by Jean S. to allow the ladies a specified specified amount to spend. The motion was agreed to by all present. Jan M. passed around a leaflet and read of the 1st meeting of our new Hall Board members. She listed the Role of the Board. Grant submission and several other other items the board agreed to on November 16th/89. The group had for their program - a few games.
