"I was on a lay-off from Houdaille Industries in Oshawa when I went in to talk to Bud Fanning who was the Director (of Recreation) Recreation) at the time," recalled Joe from behind his desk at the Town Hall. "Because I was looking after referee scheduling, Bud asked me if I would be interested in looking after some of the hockey programs. When he found out I could type, I started to do some of his secretarial secretarial work as well." The part-time winter work turned into a summer job, and as Joe puts it, "I put so much time in I finally got on salary." Joe was quick to credit Bud with bringing him along in the beginning. "Bud was the greatest teacher I ever had. When we first started working together together we shared a small office at the Lions Centre which was later turned into a washroom." Joe has been a resident in Bowmanville all of his life, and is a former graduate graduate of Bowmanville High School. Hockey and baseball took up most of his time as a youngster. "Our teams never were able to win an All-Ontario Championship in hockey or baseball. We could always reach the the semis in both sports, but there were always always different teams to beat us. In hockey it was Aurora, and in baseball it was either Milton or Thorold." After playing midget hockey, Joe ventured into the world of refereeing. "Back in . those days, there were very few refs in this area," he recalled. 'We would get sent to do games in Streetsville, Markham, and Lindsay", After 30 years of wearing the stripes, Joe, retired at the end of last year. He admitted admitted missing getting out with the guys at times, but one of his proudest projects evolved from his refereeing experience. The referee clinics that Joe conducts were his original original idea, and are considered to be "his baby". He feels the clinics give the kids a proper chance to learn how to referee referee a hockey game, something something that wasn't available to him when he came through the system. A satisfying grin comes across Joe's face when he mentions the names of kids who went through his clinics and advanced to referee at the Junior level. His son, Rob, refereed in the OHA, while another former student, student, Don Daigle, is working the lines at the OHL level. Joe's other son, George, played for two years as a goalie with the. Eagles, and his daughter, Evelyn, was a member of the Bowmanville Figure Skating Club. One of Joe's regrets is not being able to spend a lot of time with his kids when he first began working in the Community Services Department. Department. "I was away from home a lot of nights and weekends when 1 first started," he said. "I would work 200 to 300 hours of overtime in a year and think nothing of it."
