EAST OF COURTICE ROAD Those pesky Cougars just would nob give up. After Bowmanville overpowering them and grabbing a 3-0 series series lead the Cougars began to fight back. I guess it must be true that if you get a Cougar Cougar in a comer he/she will fight to the end. Game three in Bowmanville Bowmanville was a 10-2 victory for the Eagles The goals were well spread out with two goals going to Jeff Rohr, and David Fairey. Tallying singles singles were . Brad. Robinson, Glen Campbell, Kevin Mitchell, Nick Dennis, Chris Shmyr, and Shane Armstrong. Armstrong. George Pithie picked up four assists while the other assists were shared by twelve players. That's what you _ would call a balanced scoring game. This was the end of the easy going. The Cobourg boys turned on their tenacious checking. Game four in the Cougars' Cougars' den last Thursday was a close, exciting game. Shane Armstrong opened the scoring for the Eagles at 9:38 of the first period with a power play marker from brother Kelly and Shaun Rekker. Cobourg tied it on a wicked slapshot at 16:23. The 1st period ended in a 1- 1 tie. The Goodyear crew again scored first in the second frame off the stick of Nick Dennis, from linemates Campbell and Shmyr. Five minutes later the Cougars capitalized on a short handed handed opportunity to knot it at 2. For the remainder of that period and throughout the third the goal tenders shut the door both making some exceptional saves. Webster for the Eagles and Crawford for the Cougars. David Fairey Fairey almost put the game away at the 19:30 mark when he was in all alone but a cross bar got in the road. The Cougars immediately carried the play to the Engles Engles and with 6 seconds remaining, remaining, they took advantage advantage of a poor clearing attempt attempt by Bowmanville and slapped home the winner. The Cougars were full value for the win with their persistent persistent checking and blanket coverage of the Engles in the Cobourg end. A 3-2 victoiy for the green and white. Of course, everyone knew that wo would take them when wo got homo on Sunday Sunday night. Things looked good to start with. The Red Birds scored three times by the 7:30 mnrk of the first. David Fairey opened the scoring from Pithie and Rohr, big Larry Perris stole the puck and scored an un assisted marker, and Jeff FlintofT netted one on the power play from Shmyr and Rekker. That was the way the period ended. A lackadaisical effort by the Eagles and some persistence persistence by the Cougars changed things around in the second. The Cobourg boys scored two unanswered goals to make it 3-2 for the Eagles at the end of the second. second. Cobourg notched a power play goal at 2:55,. of the third, an even strength goal at 5:21 and another power play marker at 9:55. This gave the Cougars a 5-3 lead which George Pithie closed to 5-4 with 36 seconds remaining. remaining. Webster was E ulled for an extra attacker ut the Eagles couldn't get' the equalizer. Wow! It's back to Cobourg Cobourg with the series at 3-2 for the Bowmanville Boys. Would Cobourg force a seventh seventh game back in the Eagles' Eagles' nest on Tuesday night? That would be risky. Monday night's game was one of the best hockey games this year, second only to the win in Port Perry on January 18th. Jeff Rohr put the Eagles on the score board at 14:47 of the first from David Fairey Fairey and George Pithie. The Cougars tied it two minutes later on a power play. Just 25 seconds after that Nick Dennis converted a Shmyr pass to give the Goodyear boys a 2-1 lead to take to the dressing room. It was obvious obvious during this period the Engles had turned the jets on and were matching the Cougars stride for stride, and hit for hit. The Cougars seemed to come on strong in the second ns they had in game five, and they scored three unanswered unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lend. The Cougar fans were ecstatic just think they might tie the series against the mighty Eagles. But the Goodyear Engles weren't done yet. Brian Taylor and Joe Mn- clnnis lmd handled the point that Glen Campbell tipped in for the winning marker. There were still over seven minutes remaining. remaining. Bowmanville fans were tense. The Cobourg fans be- f an to file out. I guess they new Gareth Stone was going going to score the insurance marker at 16:42 from Shane and Kevin Mitchell.- Series one was under our belts with a 6-4 win. They (were correcting correcting mistakes, (coaching on the bench and inspiring their charges., Well done, the coaches just stand on the bench. Our coaches proved they can make it happen when necessary, like Monday in Cobourg, and January 18th in Port Perry. Oh, by the way, Howard Anyan and the boys want you to know that they have the chalk boards up in the . dressing rooms. We knew you could do it once the boards arrived. Port Perry and Uxbridge both won tneir series, so they will be facing off in an age old rivalry that will churn the waters of muddy Scugog. It should be a rugged series. On Saturday Februaiy 3 the V&G Nationals hosted Carters at Darlington Arena. Arena. The first period was tightly played ending with the Nationals ahead by a score of 3-1. The second period period was also a very defensive period with many nice passing passing plays but the defense on both sides kept the shots on goal to a minimum. V&G marked up two more goals ending the period with a 5-2 lead. The. Nationals broke loose in the third period scoring six times to give them an 11-4 win. The passing passing plays were excellently executed and paid off with a lot of goals. Scorers in the game were Clayton Kohn with 2 goals, Jamie Potter with two goals, Mark Hod- gins with two goals and one goal each for Greg Patterson, Patterson, Chad Jozkoski, Chris Peldiak, Ted Eeuwes and Andy Griffin. V&G Nationals Play Well at Grafton Tournament On the weekend the Nationals Nationals travelled to Grafton to play in a tournament. Playing four players short duo to a select tournament in Oshawa, the team went out to do their best. Their first game was at 9:00 and they faced off against the Baltimore Novic- plnns jieriod. With short shifts and diligent checking things started to happen. At 9:10 Gareth Stone netted a pass from Bnumhnuor and S. Armstrong, Fifty seconds later Kelly Armstrong fired n low shot from the right point that lit the red light. Glen Campbell had passed it back to him. It's all tied up. The Eagles were Hying. At 12:47 Larry Perris blasted blasted n low shot from the left and Lnny Pearce before Roger Wadoll was able to find the twine twice. Art wns screened on Roger's first goal, a low drive from 10 feet out. Roger's second goal was a masterpiece of determination ns ho fought his wny into the crenso and somehow found the puck spinning with two defenders nnd Art draped all over him. When the puck dia get into the V&G zone the defense quickly got control and passed it up the side lines to the wingers who did a great job of moving the puck into the opponents end many times getting a shot on net. The first goal of the game was scored by Greg Patterson Patterson as he picked up a pass at his blue line from Steve Marsh and carried it up to the Baltimore end going around the defense and shooting it past the goalie. This seemed to give the team the boost they needed as they scored twice more in the first period on fine goals by Mark Hodgins and Chris Peldiak. The second period was filled with end to end rushes giving the goalies and the defense lots of hard skating keeping the scoring down to a lone goal by Mark Hod- gins. It wasn't until the third period that Baltimore got on the scoreboard, but the Nationals responded by beating the Baltimore goalie three more times giving them a 7-1 win. A great effort effort was shown by the two youngest members of the team Chris Welsh and Ben Plowright as they played 'their positions tirelessly creating some good passing plays. Mark Hodgins really shone as he scored, four goals, Greg Patterson had two goals and an assist and Chris Peldiak got one goal and two assists. Ted Eeuwes and Robbie Austin also got assists. Going into the second game of the day against Grafton, the team learned right off the first faceoff that this team meant business. Even though the score did not show it with a win the team played fantastic hockey hockey with many rushes down the ice only to be blocked by the Grafton goalie. Jamie Woolner played a strong game in our net stopping two break aways. Mark Hodgins Hodgins got the only V&G goal of the game with Grafton coming out on top with a 5-1 win. These games proved an important point to the players who went to the tournament being that even though they were short four of tneir top players they were able to go out and play excellent hockey and came home with a win and a loss that could have been a loss by a much higher score if they had not played so well.
