I Darlington Auto Atom Selects Win 'B' Championship The Canadian Statesman, Bowmnnville, February 21,1990 15 " Noted TSNSportscaster Speaks to Students The Darlington Auto Atom Selects won the 'B' Championship at the Oshawa Heritage Tournament on February 10-11. In no particular order are the team members and their coaches, Wayne Aasen (coach), Paul Frayne (asst.), Rick Keeler (mgr.), Came ron Millar, Scott Sawyer, Darryl Cook, Phil Gushulak, Jason Frayne, Greg Masterson, Robbie MacCheyne, Scott MacKay, Mike Ferguson, Brian Ball, Guy Tou- signant, Jeff Thrasher, Scott MacDonald, Richard Aasen, Aasen, Ryan Brunnigan, Emile Salomon. The Darlington Auto Atom Selects have been struggling of late and playing playing in a tournament was not high on the Coach's wish list. However, the schedule had been set, the registration registration paid and we were committed. committed. The Thursday night prior to the tournament an exhibition game was held against the Newcastle Atom Rep Team. The score ended in a 2-2 tie and the team was showing signs of working working together again. The coaching staff could only hope this would continue in the tournament. In the Oshawa Heritage Tournament, our first game was against London Red Circle at 12:30 Saturday af- fcbUufUuj you Qifjtl and Qn&etùufi... We struggled for a period and a half and were down by two goals by the end of the second period. We started to play with them in the third and Scott MacDonald MacDonald got us back to within a goal with assists going to Scott MacKay and Guy Tou- signant. The last half of the period was played in their end and with one minute left in the game we bombarded bombarded their goalie with shots but couldn't buy a goal. With one second left in the game, London scored again making the final 3-1 for them. Mike Ferguson was our M.V.P. playing an outstanding game on defense. defense. The second game was against N.A.S.C. Selects from Oshawa. The boys knew we had to win this game if we wanted to play on Sunday, and the coaching staff reminded the boys of a couple of points before they went on the ice. They wanted wanted a quick start, the first shot on net, the first goal. In the case of a tie, these were the tie breakers. With a minute gone in the first period, period, no. one had a shot on goal. Oshawa took a penalty and the advantage swung our way. During the man advantage the puck moved back to the point, the defenseman defenseman let the shot go, and it hit an Oshawa player on the pad, bounced behind our defenseman and Oshawa had a break-away! After a real good move on our goalie, the puck was in the net and we were down 1- 0. Now we had to beat them! A tie would give them the game. We continued to press and at the 6:14 mark of the first period, Jeff Thrasher blocked a clearing pass at their blue line, moved it into the corner to Scott MacKay ' P£ MacDonald who put it in the net.. The boys continued to work hard with Robbie MacCheyne MacCheyne setting the example with his continual second efforts efforts and were rewarded when Jason Frayne put in Scott MacDonald's rebound. Although we had the advantage advantage in play we couldn't get - another goal to ease the pressure. Our goalie tandem of Scott Sawyer and Cameron Cameron Millar played super for us with Cameron winning the M.V.P. award. The final score was 2-1, and we moved to the 'B' Championship Final. Final. After each player was introduced introduced to the crowd and O'Canada was sung, the Darlington Auto squad showed they had come to play from the drop of the puck. The play was continually continually in Hamilton's end but again we couldn't get a goal. We didn't get a goal that counted until the 10:26 mark of the third period when Jason Frayne set up Emile Salomon. The boys had been frustrated because of the two disallowed goals from quick whistles. The insurance insurance goal came with 4:34 left in the game when Phil Gushulak, playing back to form, kept the puck in at the blue line, fired it in front of the net and Scott MacDonald MacDonald banked it off a Hamilton player into the net. The whole team was playing playing the way they are able to. Not all the passes are on the sticks or all checks made but they are giving the effort to make these things happen. The line of Danyl Cook, Greg Masterson and Brian Ball moved the puck around very well but had no luck around the net. Ryan Bran- nigan who plays with Emile and Jason continues to be a valuable asset to that line If we were as generous with our advertising as we were with our remodelling, this would be a full page ad. The other defenseman, Richard Aasen, continues to play a solid game and is now pounding the puck from the blueline. The score board did not note the fact that we dominated dominated this game, Hamilton only had six shots on our goalies. Mike Ferguson was again picked as the M.V.P. The boys played some very entertaining hockey this weekend ana it looks like we're back on the right track. Congratulations Darlington Darlington Auto Selects!!! Triple F Bowling its, by Brad Kelly It's, a remark that's a nightmare to the ears of every every TV personality. "Your face looks familiar, but I can't seem to remember remember your name." For TSN broadcaster Gino Reda, it's a remark that isn't uttered too often by , his faithful flock of Sportsdesk followers. Gino was a guest speaker at Durham Christian High School on Wednesday, February February 14 as a part of the school's 'special emphasis week.' Taking part hi a panel panel discussion to start the morning, students were given given the opportunity to visit Gino in two separate workshops. workshops. During the one hour workshops, Gino opened up the floor to the students who flooded him with questions regarding the world of sports. Sitting in front of a classroom classroom of approximately 20 students, Gino appeared as comfortable as he does in front of the cameras. Sports- desk, which can be seen on TSN five times daily, is where Gino receives the bulk of his work. His side- kick- on the late night version version of the show, is Oshawa's Paul Romanuk. Gino has the type of personality personality that allows you to become immediate friends with him. Numerous times during the lunch break between between workshops, students stopped by to ask a question, question, or simply listen to his answers. Like a true professional, professional, Gino took the time to answer the barrage of questions questions while maintaining his warm smile. Speaking to the students, Gino offered some insight on what motivates him. "I want to be the best sports commentator in Canada. Canada. I'm not sure if I can be, but that's my goal." "During our late night shows we don't do a lot of commentaries because that's not why the people tune in. At 11:00 o'clock at night, people want to know the ' score of the Leaf game, they don't want to hear what I thought about the game," commented Gino when asked if he would like to do more commentaries during his shows. Getting involved in sports as a line of work was, as he put it, "a fluke." "When I was 16 I phoned the local cable company and told them I was interested in doing some sports reporting reporting because I thought it would be fun." It turned out to be a disaster." After a couple more 'disasters,' 'disasters,' Gino began to work on a phone-in snow for the cable company that was gaining popularity with every every showing. The show opened some doors for him and he began to do some freelance work for Jim Tatti on Global's Sportsline. Just prior to signing a full-time contract with the Global Television Television Network, he was offered offered an audition with TSN, and promptly signed a contract contract with them. Gino, who arrived in Canada Canada from England at the age of five, resides with his wife in Meadowvale. With the expression expression on his face similar to that of a poker player who has just been dealt four aces, Gino mentioned that his wife is expecting the couple's first child this summer. summer. Discussing the advantages advantages and disadvantages of doing doing live TV, Gino recalled an incident that happened to him and Paul Romanuk during during the Pan-Am Games. "We were doing our late night Sportsdesk snow when it came across the wire that Canada had won its first gold medal in dual pistol shooting. Not being familiar with tne sport, Romanuk and I had visions of one guy running with the bull's eye while the other tried to shoot at it, or one person aiming the gun and the other other firing it." "We both lost it, and broke out into all-out laughter. laughter. The producer was screaming in our ears to straighten up, but it wasn't much use. At the end of the show, Paul tried to apologize for our behavior but we ended ended up laughing again." Not a fan of fighting in hockey, he often asks that the fights in a game be left out of his highlight packages. packages. "I'm not a big fan of fighting fighting in hockey. The best live hockey game I ever saw was the 1987 Canada Cup final game between Canada and the Soviet Union. After seeing seeing that game, I just can't buy the fact that you need to fight to play hockey." Within the next three weeks, TSN will be airing a show on the survival of the CFL. Gino has been doing some investigative reporting, reporting, and has uncovered some material regarding the operation operation of the CFL that he couldn't comment on. If the work he has done on the CFL story, matches the work he did during the Dubin Inquiry into the use of drugs in amateur sport, it will be a must see. TSN sportscaster Gino Reda paid a visit to Durham Christian High School on Wednesday, February 14 as a guest speaker during the school's special emphasis week. Gino recalled some of the funnier moments that have occurred while working on Sportsdesk. Youth Bowling Results Saturday, February 10, 1990.
