Prescott introduced introduced Mrs. Sylvia Spice of Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Mrs. Spice has 18 Dept, heads reporting to her on various aspects of hospital expansion. Our hospital started in 1913 .with 18 beds and in 1951 was expanded to a 50 bed unit. The west wing was built in 1962 as a 4 storey expansion expansion with 89 beds. The new east wing, with entrance to the south on Prince St. will be opening now in various stages with the official opening and tours slated for April 1st. The hospital will in future future have 121 beds. Aggregate Act Effective Jan. 1st CALL PASTOR RONN AT 987-5549 The Aggregate Resources Act, proclaimed January 1, 1990, strengthens Ontario's ability to control potentially adverse effects of aggregate extraction on society and the environment. The new act creates the necessary balance between the need for aggregates in industry and society, and the need for environmental protection. The aggregate industry is vital to the economy of Ontario. Ontario. Approximately 186- million tonnes of sand, gravel gravel and crushed stone, cement, cement, lime and bricks are used every year in construction construction and manufacturing, with a value to the Ontario economy of about $1.6- billion. Under the new legislation, legislation, municipalities will have a greater hand in licensing licensing and reviewing pit and quarry operations, and will receive remuneration from pits and quarries on private land in designated areas. To address the changes, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Natural Resources will be hosting hosting two general meetings to outline the new legislation and discuss and answer any questions you may have. Worden Elementary School Happenings at St. Stephen's The second semester at St. Stephen's High School began on Thursday the first of February. Since then, St. Stephen's has been busy witn many events. The students are getting used to the new staff, students students and schedules. Course changes are available until Friday the sixteenth. The rehearsals for our up and coming play, "Up The Down Staircase", recently started, and the play will be ready to be performed early in May. As^usual, many sporting, events have gone on at St. Stephen's. Recently, our midget girl's volleyball team captured captured the first place prize at a tournament at Clarke High School. Until now, their standing had always remained at second place. The midget boys' volleyball volleyball team also defeated Clarke High in the February 6th game, but the Junior boys' team wasn't as fortunate fortunate at that time. Our Spirit Week was held from February 4th to the 9th. This year's theme was "Cruise Around the World Week", and on the first four days there were activities for different countries such as Mexico, and Ireland. On the last day of spirit week students were to go to Enniskillen Enniskillen for Royal Pride day, but the trip was cancelled cancelled because of the pitiful weather. and is one of several Brownie and Guide groups which have been formed recently in the growing Courtice area. The new Brownies are shown above. Today, February 16th, our Grade 11 students are off to Camp Northern Lights with Father Bill Moloney, Mr. Day and Mr. Sheridan.
