ONE COUPON PER FAMILY Thanks to the Access to Permanent Housing Committee, Committee, 913 people in the Durham Region found a place to live last year. Barbara Black, chairperson chairperson of the committee, said that the people that have been helped oy the service are people who have been newly separated, victims of violence or recently released from institutions. "Generally speaking they are the most fragile members members of the community," she said. Ms Black spoke to members members of Durham Regional Council last week to ask for their continued support of the program. In 1988, she stated, council council gave endorsement and financial financial support to the first year of a two-year project. The project is now going into its second year and Ms Black asked that their support support not be withdrawn. Durham Region provides 20 per cent funding for the project while the province supplies the remaining 80 per cent. Cost of running the service is $177,840. Big Sisters Shelter for Youth, YWCA, and the John Howard Society are some of the organizations helped by the committee. "I know you are faced with a difficult decision," Ms Black said. She asked that members of the committee look at the long term benefits of the program such as people returning returning to the workforce and being restored to a productive productive community life. Members of council decided, decided, in a recorded vote of 23-2 (six members were absent) that the program be includ ed in the general levy budget. budget. The finance and admin-) istration committee will deal with it before council can" make the final decision on it. ; Oshawa Councilloi Pau-i line Beal suggested that the funding request be referred to the finance and administration administration committee for consideration consideration in the budget discussions discussions but found no support from her fellow councillors. She said she didn't want to ask the taxpayers to pay more and couldn't see the committee "helping that many people." Pickering Councillor Doug Dickerson said the project was a "benefit to the Region" that needed to be approved today. W averley P.S. News : Waverley did a great job for the speeches this year.
