Saturday. Fred and I thought it was amusing, we wondered if you might too. Best regards from Ottawa! Ottawa! Teresa Tighe-Jensen When the old place doesn't really look like the old place anymore by Charles Gordon Great concern was expressed expressed when it was announced announced that a Hollywood movie was being shot in RockclifTe Park because Rockcliffe Park looks like Kansas City. But what can you do? It is a worldwide problem. Much of the world doesn't look like itself any more. What will happen when they finally want to make a movie about Rockcliffe Park? The answer is obvious. obvious. The answer is obvious. When they make the great movie about Rockcliffe Park, it will be set in the Back Bay area of Boston, because when it comes time to make the movie, Rockcliffe won't look enough like Rockcliffe. So they'll move the whole thing down to Boston, truck in some, snow from somewhere somewhere - Switzerland, maybe, because Canadian snow won't look enough like Canadian Canadian snow. At least that's the way things are going. Reality has not been good enough for the movies for some time. This week, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward Woodward were here to shoot part of a movie. The movie needed needed snow, and snow we have, so the production company set up and shot in Rockcliffe Park. ! Rockcliffe... Park was standing in fob.Kansas Cjty, Missouri, which is where the film is set. Some local residents may take offence at that, but the fact is that if they had really wanted to make a movie about Ottawa, they would have moved the location to Bowmanville. Bowmanville is where many of the exterior shots for the CBC move The Private Private Capital were set. It apparently apparently looks more like turn-of-the-century Ottawa than Ottawa does. It is true that the real Ottawa Ottawa was used for some scenes. Parliament Hill, for example, figured prominently, prominently, but snow had to be trucked in for scenes requiring requiring it, the city being unable to produce enough of its own. The snow was being trucked in from Hull, which may, according to reports, be standing in for Montreal in an upcoming film. People in Rockcliffe should not feel bad about standing in for Kansas City. This sort of thing happens nil the time. Toronto, as everybody everybody knows, is well used to it by now. The city hns stood in for just about every city you can name - including including New York, in the movie Moonstruck. Calgary was Chicago in the movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Yet Calgary, Calgary, when a movie was being being made n few years ago about its earlier self, suffered suffered the disgrace of having BRIDES-TO-BE. . . Or maybe it' was the other other way around. It is easy to be confused when nothing looks like itself. For the moment, our immediate immediate concern must be with those who have spent obscene amounts of money to buy property in Rockcliffe only to be tola now, when it is too late, that their neighbourhood neighbourhood looks just like Kansas City. Here are some consoling thoughts: 1. Kansas City is Missouri's Missouri's second-largest city. 2. Everything is up to date in it. 3. Kansas City lead the American nation in the marketing marketing of hard winter wheat. 4. Many famous songs have been written about Kansas City, and none at all have been written about Rockcliffe Park. Someone once wrote a song called Rockcliffe Around the Clock- cliffe and sent to Bill Haley, who said it needed work. 5. Kansas City has two professional sports teams. 6. Kansas City leads the U.S. in frozen food storage capacity. It could have been worse. The producers could have chosen Rockcliffe Park to be Kansas City for other reasons, reasons, such as there being bloody beef carcasses hanging hanging on hooks all over the place. But it wasn't anything anything like that. It was just Rockcliffe's snow that attracted the producers. producers. That, and the proximity to Bowmanville.
