On Saturday evening, a splendid banquet was enjoyed at the Newcastle Newcastle Elmhurst Hotel when the annual Town League Hockey Club held a combined dinner and meeting. Head table guests, Reeve Douglas Cunningham and Cecil Carveth presented the trophies to the leading goaltender, Charlie Reid and leading scorer Howard Quinney. President Roily Spencer presented a trophy to the coach of the winning hockey team, the Truckers, Truckers, who in turn presented the trophies to each of his players, Gary Barchard, Ron Best, Russell Powell, Gord Lowery, Don Gillespie, Ted Lane, Dick Vander- stoop, Bob Shearer, Ken Gray, Sherman Shields, Albert Albert Green, Keith Robinson and Larry Pearce. Pres. Spencer then called for the election of officers for the coming season. Elected by acclamation were Brian Rowe, President; Bob Shearer, Vice-President; Larry Pearce, Secretary-Treasurer. FLASHBACK -- 10 YEARS AGO - Bowmanville Merchants are getting ready for another season of senior hardball. Murray O'Brien, John Stainton, Doug Smart and Scott Burgess, at a recent meeting of the baseball club, were busy checking out some of the equipment. Organizational meetings will be held this month. Peewee Selects travel to Buffalo to take part in the 2nd annual South Buffalo Invitational tournament. tournament. I.O.O.F. would play three round robin games against Dofasco, West Seneca Seneca and Binghampton. The team -with the most points would advance to the conference conference championship. Injuries and other commitments commitments would prevent Scott McGregor ana Mark Read from competing in the tournament. Both players would be missed. Binghampton would score less than a minute minute into the game to take an early lead. With play in the second period, I.O.O.F. would score two quick goals to get back into the game. Andrew Ferguson would tie the score with Mike Ta- lotti picking up the assist. Less than a minute later, Craig Taylor would drive to the net, pick up a rebound and score to give I.O.O.F. the lead. Before the ' period ended the teams would exchange goals with the score tied and I.O.O.F. shorthanded, Rob Watson would pick the corner corner high to the glove side. Binghampton would tie the score late in the third and the game ended in a 3-3 draw. The game could have been lost if it wasn't for the stand up gonltcnding of Clayton Rendell and Brian Pickard. After a team meeting meeting was called, a new game plan was put together for game number two against West Seneca. The team meeting paid off. Jeff Dart opened the scoring with Jeff son. With less than a minute left in the game, Andrew Ferguson would put it out of reach with an empty net goal. I.O.O.F. went on to win the game 4-3. The second game was a real team effort. Ian Boruts- kie, Jeff Hughes, Andrew Ferguson and Craig Taylor did an excellent job covering the West Seneca defence. Les McCrory, Chad Veinot, Adam Kooy and Charlie Hargest did a good job on the defence, keeping the front of the net clear. For the second game in a row. Clayton Rendell and Brian Pickard did a great job in net. The third and final game would see I.O.O.F. play Dofasco. Dofasco. I.O.O.F. had played Dofasco on four previous occasions occasions with each team winning winning two games. Goaltending would be the key to this game. Clayton Rendell started the game and he was outstanding. Time and time again Clayton Clayton frustrated the Dofasco team making several glove saves. At the other end of the rink, the Dofasco goalie robbed I.O.O.F. players. Mike Talotti opened the scoring in the second period unassisted to give I.O.O.F. the lead. Before the period ended, Dofasco would score two power play goals to take the lead. Hockin Drops Lindsay Match By Bob Sheridan Saturday morning we were faced with outstanding goaltending and suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Malvern Elbow Benders. In the afternoon contest we overwhelmed the Bridge- north Selects 8-1. Joe Saison Saison opened the scoring by driving home a Dave Green rebound. Ed Schryer found Bob Sheridan in the crease and we were ahead 2-0. Joe then scored his second of the game, quickly followed by goals from Bob Deblois ana Gerry Henderson before Bridgenorth scored their only goal. On the very next shift, George Sainsbury scored two goals, one by picking the 'ose in ana the Selects. Bob Deblois scored our first two goals with two very accurate shots from opposite opposite sides of the net. Ron Clemens and George Sainsbury Sainsbury drew assists on these goals. George then scored our third goal on a low blast from the blue line that completely completely handcuffed the Ajax goaltender. Jug City Novice Novice Select Blackhawks have just returned from a hectic four-day Buffalo March Classic Hockey Tournament. With five teams representing representing Bowmanville and area and a contingent of nearly 300 parents, relatives and supporters in tow, Bowmanville Bowmanville was the largest group represented. After three physically demanding demanding games, against New York state teams, the Graham Jug city Novice Blackhawks were the only B.M.H.A. team to advance to the finals. The opening game, Friday Friday morning was against a very aggressive team from Cazenovia N.Y. This game was perhaps the strongest team effort the Bowmanville crew has registered this year as the team had to ignore ignore the chippy play of the opposition, and in so doing combined for a 7-1 win. Late Friday afternoon, after after hours of Mall browsing, the team met a bruising team from Batavia N.Y. Saturday was a little less hectic on the lads, with only one game scheduled for early early afternoon.
