Doug Larmer is demonstrating the art of sheep shearing before before a crowd in attendance at the annual Lamb Awareness Day program which is sponsored by sheep producers of the Durham Region. Courtice . Secondary SShool student" Was among four Ontario 4-H representatives representatives selected to attend the 4-H national dairy conference conference in Madison, Wisconsin late last year. Glenn Barkey described his experiences to the Bowmanville Bowmanville Rotary Club April 4. Glenn lives on a family farm in Enfield and is currently currently completing his OAC year at Courtice Secondary School. He is planning on a career in agriculture, adding that his ambition is to become become a dairy farmer. Glenn showed slides of one farm in which a herd of 3,200 cattle filled a pair of 5,000 gallon tanks twice a day. It was a major contrast with the herd at his home farm which numbers about 100 cattle, of which 30 are milked at any gjvcn time. Most herds in Wisconsin are, however, of a more modest modest size. The Ontario contingent also had an opportunity to visit the headquarters of Hoard's Dairyman, a magazine magazine considered by many to bo the Bible of the industry. In addition to producing their dairy publication, the publisher also operates its own farm for the purpose of testing and researching some of the methods that it discusses in print. Visits to a dairy farming museum and to the University University of Wisconsin's test farm were also on the itinerary.
