Guelph Meeting Encouraging women to become more knowledgeable and responsible citizens, and identifying and resolving resolving needs in the community have lead the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario, Ontario, at their recent Board meeting, in Guelph, to make two major decisions. For many years OMAF, with the assistance of volunteer volunteer help from Women's Institute Institute members, use to have a series of leadership courses designed for farm and rural women. OMAF have discontinued these courses, however the farm and rural women really needed these courses, and have been expressing a great concern at the loss of the courses. Federated Women's Institute of Ontario Ontario (FWIO) have started a two year pilot project with Barb Klages and Maxine Innés Hollbrough to have these life-skills . workshops returned to the rural community. community. Previously the workshops . and materials were free but now the participants participants will have to pay. Details Details on how each District will be participating will be announced at the upcoming W.I. District Annuals. The two courses for this year are Baking Bread and Landscaping Landscaping your Home. Any person or group may participate participate in these courses. Watch for details in your District. Secondly, the theme for FWIO for this decade is Women and the Environment. Environment. To help the members understand now their local efforts affect all Canada, FWIO has organized Conference Conference -90 Women and the Environment, Environment, to be held at Carleton University, Ottawa, Ottawa, June 1-3, FWIO Board Directors were brought up to date on the speakers at the Conference. Key-note speaker is Eleanor Eleanor Wood, who offers encouragement encouragement to all women to -be the best they can be. Among the workshop leaders are; Dr. Dwain Burgess, speaking on "Can we see the Forest for the Trees". Dr. Jack Vallentyne, better better known to the school- children as Johnny Bio-, sphere, will discuss "The Great Lakes, from Water . Quality to Mothers and their Milk". Indian prophecies and how the native people see the environment will be dis- . cussed by Sarah Smith, a member of the Turtle Clan • of the Mohawk Tribe. A very active Women's • Institute member and Reeve ' of her Township, Pat Salter, - will be telling participants "To Learn to Live As If Nature Nature Matters". In 1988 the Women's Institute Institute were challenged to come up with 100 Environ-. mental Projects, the final results results will be announced at the Ottawa Conference. As well the Conference • participants will be told how 1 they can affect the lives of • rural and farm women throughout the world. Agriculture is very much on tne minds of all FWIO ' members, and ten different ; items on the agenda dealt with agriculture issues. In- - eluding the announcement . that Mrs. Annie Haggerty, FWIO Nominee, had been accepted into the Ontario • Agriculture Hall of Fame. FWIO represent all women, • rural ana urban, on the Royal Royal Winter Fair Association, the showcase of the best of • the agriculture community. , The Affects of GATT and GST on the agriculture communities communities were discussed. The availability of rural child-care is one of the concerns concerns of FWIO, who in 1984 initiated the first pilot project project in Ontario. FWIO have just sent out questionnaires throughout Ontario, on behalf behalf of Federated Women's Institutes of Canada, to assess assess the needs of rural children children in all the rural areas of Canada. Although some rural rural areas have been questioned, questioned, there has not been a questionnaire designed to assess the needs or all the rural areas from Newfoundland Newfoundland and British Columbia. Those FWIO Board Directors Directors who will be travelling to England in July to help the English and Welsh Women's Institutes celebrate their 76th were wished well. FWIO will bo holding a reception reception at Ontario House in London, to honour this special special occasion. Women's Institutes can tritely bo said to bo women involved in concerns whether whether they are local or global.
