In 1921 it was moved to the present Wellington and < Scugog address. During its 88 year histo- i* ry, the foundry has had f some setbacks, one of which was a devastating fire that t; occurred in 1960. But, the I' plant also experienced con- '■ siderable success after its re- l building in 1961 with the in- troduction of the electrical KÎÎ conduction furnaces. >>;>. In 1940, the Bowmanville IFoundry was the first foun- p dry in the world to use an annealing process which cut . ; ( the processing time from 14 ",'days to 24 hours. , " "The Foundry has had ! When asked why he and his partner would buy what seems on the surface to be part of an obsolete industry, Michael Patrick said that they had looked into many businesses and after researching researching the prospects, decided decided that the foundry industry industry was undergoing a revival. "We were looking for a business with a future. And foundry in Ontario or area, so the firm is now exporting finished products to the United States. And the demand demand for products is. increasing increasing every day "The Free Trade agreement agreement has been very good for us," Mr. Patrick commented. The foundry is now producing producing parts for the John Deere and J. I. Case firms among others and has 2,000 to 2,500 casting patterns producing 20 to 30 different products every day. "We have 45 people producing producing tractor parts, fire hydrant hydrant wrenches, playground equipment and hydro pole hardware," Mr. Patrick stated. stated. In the 1960's, foundries went through some tough times and some 20 malleable malleable iron plants in the area went under. But, because of the many innovations in the industry, the lack of competition competition and a good customer base, the new owners see a good future ahead. "Most of the backbreaking backbreaking labour has been removed removed from foundry work due to technical advances, but the workers still earn their pay," said Mr. Patrick. Due to advances in safety procedures, foundries are now safer places to work. A the Bowmanville Foundry in better quality products and improved delivery methods. Success breeds its own brand of problems, and, with the increased demands for products being placed upon the industry, the owners are now looking for a larger alternate alternate site within the Bowmanville Bowmanville area. Tom Rehder, grandson of the founder, Christian Rehder, Rehder, sold the business to Mr. Patrick and his partner. But he still comes into the plant to cast stove parts and other other broken pieces of equipment equipment for his friends. "One condition of the sale was that Tom have access to the foundry for the rest of his life," explained Mr. Patrick. Patrick. The future is iron-cast for the Bowmanville Foundry. Now they are delving into traditional areas such as cast-iron toys and banks as future products. All of these reflect the varied nature of the industry's past and the promise of its future. By Harvey Malcolm Here at Malconia following following two weeks of a hectic pace, things are slowing down to an escargot crawl or slower. In fact both inmates and visitors have definitely slipped into slow gear. Sure we did take one afternoon to teach (?) or perhaps we should say initiate our male guest into the intricities of playing golf and he proved to,be an avid learner. In fact he ended up beating us on Durham East 4H Horse Club Holds Meeting On June 21, 1990 the Durham 4H Horse Club held its 4th meeting at Ashby's. We opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge. Jessica read last meeting's minutes. Our president was absent so vice-president took care of business, announcing that "Go for the Gold" would be on Aug. 2,1990 at 7:00. Also that it would be at Solina Hall. After roll call which was "name one parasite and one important fact about it," we split into 3 groups of 4. Group 3 went with Shelly to talk about diseases causing unsoundness. Group 2 went with Maiy Ruth to talk about diseases like tetanus. We also had a short quiz. Group 1 went with Laura to talk about conformation of a horse. We switched groups every 20 min. After we were all done we went inside and had a short "Go for the Gold" game. Mrs. Ashby served refreshments which were brownies and kool-aid. The meeting was adjourned by Kate and Seconded Seconded by Laura. The next meeting will be held at Leanne's in Newcastle. On July 19, 1990 the Durham Horse club held its 5th meeting at Leanne Tre- siders. We started the meeting meeting with the 4-H pledge and Jessica read the minutes. Next, she did the roll call which was name one disease contagious or non- contagious and one fact about it. After that we held a "Go for the Gold" game so that we could be ready for the real thing on August 2nd, 1990 at 7:00. After that Doug handed out sheets on health of a horse.. Then we watched a special movie on foaling and after we talked about the movie. We had refreshments refreshments while we were watching the movie. Liz adjourned the meeting meeting and Kate seconded it. The next meeting will be held at Byers on the 23 of August. On the 26th we will be going to Windfield Farms for a tour at 1:00 p.m. Submitted by Kate Barrie one particular "hole" which may prove one of two things, either he was reasonably good or I was unreasonably bad. Also on Sunday a first for our Malconia inmates, Jan and Nel are members of the Baptist Church in Holland and after three weeks at Malconia possibly felt the need to be re-vitalized "Spiritually. In fact after referring referring to John in the past as the 'Jerk from Urk' - a small island in Holland where he was born, in case your wondering, wondering, we have re-named him 'John the Baptist' - a marked improvement. Anyhow Anyhow never having attended a Baptist Church, we (Corrie and I) volunteered to take them to the closest church which is on Scugog Island and take advantage of the opportunity of seeing how part of the other half live. Must admit we were very favourably impressed with the hospitality of its members. members. In literal fashion, "we were strangers and they took us in". Even provided a local member to speak Hollander Hollander to our guests. Also thanks to the chap, who gave us a guided tour of their lovely Church. We shall refrain from embarrassing embarrassing him by mentioning his name - suffice it to say, he is a Scottish-Irishman who has something to do with a Texas city that should be a clue.
