Game three was played last night (Tuesday) in Oshawa. Bowmanville Pagans' game last Wednesday. The Pagans scored five runs in the sixth inning to rout the Oshawa Kids 9-3, in an Oshawa and District Men's Fastball Fastball League game. by Brad Kelly The Bowmanville Pagans' fastball game last Wednesday Wednesday night had similarities to an opera. Nobody could leave their seats until the final act was concluded. But when the curtain was drawn, the "fat lady" sang to the the tune of a win for the Pagans in an Oshawa and District Men's Fastball League game. Entering the sixth inning clinging to a one run lead, the Pagans turned the game into a rout by scoring five runs for an easy 9-3 victory over the Oshawa Kids. It was the eighth win in the past 10 games for the Pagans, and the second consecutive consecutive home win against the Kids. They defeated them on July 18 by a 9-6 score. Despite a depleted lineup, lineup, the Pagans played a sound game both defensively and at the plate. One of the emergency substitutions was player/coach Dean Jon- cas who filled in admirably at first base, hitting first a triple and then a home run. "We've been short players all year, and I can't understand understand it," said the frustrated coach following the game. "We've got a lot of guys signed, and they're making it difficult for the sport to survive." "I'll tell you this, we'll be looking for some new players next year, and you canput that in the paper." The Pagans only had eight regulars in the line up, thus the need to press Jon- cas into service. Prior to the contest, he had missed the last 12 of 13 games with a bad ankle. The ankle didn't seem to bother him as he strode to the plate to lead off the sixth inning with the Pagans up by one run. He crushed a ball to deep left-centre field •and scampered home before the outfield could retrieve the ball. Four hits and four runs later, the Pagans had built a 9-3 lead. Oshawa was set down in order in the seventh by Jer- tv Thompson who came into the game in relief of starter Keith Adamson. "We did all right tonight. The guys did a great job of adapting to what we had," summarized coach Joncas. "The way we've been hitting lately, this game was an uncharacteristic uncharacteristic show for us." The Pagans ran into early early trouble as Adamson was touched up for three runs on five hits in the first two in nings. The most damaging hit was a two run homer in the second inning that gave Oshawa a 3-2 advantage. The big right-hander settled settled into a groove after that and didn't allow another run. In all, he scattered eight hits, and recorded five strike-outs over his six innings innings of work. The Pagans received some homerunpower in the first inning as Thompson hit. a . solo shot that eluded the glove of the left fielderi Defensively, Defensively, catcher Glen Fish- " er was the bright spot as he gunned down three Oshawa runners trying to steal second. second. "Right now we're near the top of the standings and seem to be the team to beat," said Joncas. "We struggle with a makeshift team every night, but if we get everyone out well be all right." The Pagans will be back 5 in action at Memorial Park next Wednesday night (August (August 22), as Carlos will be in town for a 7:00 p.m. start. 328 RITSON RD.
