Rotary Welcomes New Member by Lorria Miller "We won't be here next week, five-year-old Paul Watson inadvertently informed informed the congregation one Sunday. "We're going to pick strawberries." Ted Watson, a recent Rotary Rotary recruit, related this anecdote in his classification speech, to the BowmanviHe Rotary Club last week. Ted began his career as a market gardener in the early early '70s on the outskirts of BowmanviHe. "I always wanted to be a farmer from the time I was five or six," he said. That was not a surprising ambition ambition for Ted, because he is now the sixth generation fruit grower in his family. . But, he found that it was not all fertiHzer and fruition. fruition. In 1966, after hearing rumours rumours that a highway was going to run through his property, Ted and family prudently purchased adjacent adjacent acreage out of the proposed proposed traffic zone. Now came the tough job of choosing and planting the best crops. Strawberries were selected as the largest cash crop next to apples and in 1969 the famous Watson strawberries were being sought out from such distances distances as Kingston and Toronto. Toronto. In 1970-71 the "pick your own" idea took hold and the Watson farm thronged with families harvesting fresh fruit to freeze or can. At the peak of the pick your own craze, the Watson farm was employing up to 75 people. Today, with the popularity of picking your own fruit having peaked in the early '80s, the farm employs employs 35-40 people. The Watson farm now has 40 acres in apples, 20 acres in strawberries and seven acres in raspberries. "Most people today want to purchase picked fruit at the roadside rather than pick their own," Ted said. "It was an 'in thing" in 1983, but is now going out of style. Studies have shown that out of the people who come to the roadside stand, 35% do so for the location; 20% for freshness; 30% for other reasons reasons and only 4% for price." Another concern the Watsons Watsons have had to deal with is the new public awareness about the hazards of chemicals chemicals used to spray the crops. "Is our food safe?" has become become a routinely asked question question that the Watsons have had to answer. "The government has regulated regulated the amount of potentially potentially harmful chemicals in the sprays we use to one in a trillionth part. Or, equal to one day in 27,000 years," assured assured Ted Watson who never never washes his own strawberries. strawberries. Ted, his wife, Georgie, and his family, Paul, now 18; Keith, 16, and Cheryl, 12, are happy with their way of life in spite of all the external pressures brought to bear by changing times and the tougher restrictions imposed. Ted Watson has achieved his dream. He is a successful farmer, has a happy home and now is a new Rotarian. Rotarian Ted Watson was introduced by Rotarian Alfred Alfred Allin and thanked by Rotarian Dal Dalrymple. Guests at the meeting were from Cobourg and Waterloo. Waterloo.
