Surprise, surprise. I say that sarcastically because I'm less and less shocked each time I learn that another athlete was on drugs. It's almost to the point where it isn't out of the ordinary anymore anymore to hear of an athlete with a drug dependency problem. Who checked into the Betty Ford Clinic this week? Who didn't pass this week's test?, They're questions that come to my mind every time I pick up a paper. Grant Fuhr, of the Edmonton Edmonton Oilers, is the latest latest casualty of the "Just Say No To Drugs" campaign. campaign. It has been common practice over the years for the NHL to slap a suspension suspension onto a player who was found guilty of drug use. Bob Probert is the most recent example, of the harsh rules the i NHL has regarding the use of drugs. But Fuhr's case isn't the same as Probert's. As a matter of fact, it's not even close. . Fuhr wasn't ■ caught with drugs in his possession. possession. No arrest by local authorities was made. No charges, no court date, and no criminal record. But it won't matter in the eyes of the powers who run the NHL. The fact that he was a user is enough to warrant a suspension. suspension. But should it? Fuhr, in a roundabout , way, admitted that he once had a problem. He apparently sought help and has kicked tne habit. Unlike a common citizen citizen like you or I, Fuhr's story made front page news. It even went as far as being the lead story on many nightly television newscasts. If it were you or I, we might have made the police police briefs section on page three or four of The Statesman. Our names , wouldn't have, been mentioned, mentioned, .and there wouldn't have , been any reporters with cameras and notepads waiting on our doorstep. But because Fuhr is a pro athlete, the publicity comes with the territory. Just as it did for Ben Johnson when he failed his test. It's not the type of publicity an athlete is looking for, but more and more seem to be finding it. My problem is that even though Fuhr worked out his problem, he will still receive a suspension. I don't believe the same would happen to you or I. If the same set of circumstances occurred, occurred, our jobs, I would like to believe, would still be there for us and no suspension would be imposed. imposed. His dependency didn't interfere with his performance performance while on the job. In fact, he was one of the best goalies in the league during his problem. Ana to add fuel to the fire, how many pro athletes athletes are going to come forward if they have a drug problem when thev know a suspension will be the punishment? He may not realize it now, but some good will inevitably come of this for Fuhr. Unlike you or I, Fuhr will probably become a very rich man as the result result of his dependency. A book, no doubt, is on the horizon.
