I ) ) Bantams on Tourney Trail The team entered their second major tournament of the young season but did not enjoy the success they did in Unionville. f Toros 6 - Nepean 2 The boys seemed to be ready for this one and iced the same line combination shift after shift and looked like they were having fun, potting two first-period goals. Derek Smith scored after some hard work along the boards by Shawn Stephenson. Stephenson. Sean Brown scored ai picture goal by dekeing the goalkeeper and putting the puck high under the crossbar, with Chad Vande- rende assisting. Ryan Robinson scored on a-goal pass from Mike Landers Landers with one second remaining remaining in the second period, Mike Stacey also assisting. Shawn Stephenson Stephenson from Derek Smith and Jeff Murphy, then Sean Gibbons from Sean Brown and Jamie Brake. - The Toros were awarded a-penalty shot with 23 seconds seconds remaining on a very unusual call by the official, with Sean Brown doing the honors and scoring to give the Toros the 6-2 victory. Shawn Stephenson was awarded the MVP of the game. • Alliston 3 -- Toros 1 A very small but disciplined disciplined and positional club handed the Toros their first loss of the tournament. The Toros, in the first period, period, looked like they were going to pick up from game one, with many scoring opportunities. opportunities. But the first period period ended scoreless. The Alliston goalkeeper had to hold his own, time and time again, as the Toros failed to capitalize on their opportunities. The Toros tried to open up the game and left Chris McCarthy alone to make several key saves, but at 3:55, Alliston jumped out in front 1-0. Alliston scored two more unanswered goals in the third before Ryan Robinson from Craig Rickard and Sean Brown put the Toros on the scoresheet, but it was too little too late. Owen Sound 2-Toros 2 The Toros entered this game not only in need of a victory, but also having to win each period for a very Darlington Auto Selects Manhandle Manvers, 17-0 . On November 10 and 11, the Auto Centre Atom Selects Selects met with little resistance, resistance, beating Manvers 17-0 on the 10th and Trenton 10- 4 on the 11th. Our forwards had no problems finding the net and our defence worked har'd clearing the zone. Both goaltenders made some great saves. On November 15 and 17, the boys met the CYO selects selects and saw a bit more competition. However, they still came away with two more wins. Final scores were 5-3 and 6-5 respectively. respectively. November 18, the Auto Centre showed what team work is all about. They met the major atom Bruins at Children's Arena and kept everyone on the edge of their seats throughout the game. The Bruins opened the scoring with two goals, but Scott MacDonald assisted by Jason Frayne came back at the one minute mark of the first period. Trevor Wright kept the boys in the game by making some spectacular saves in net. In the second ■ period, Danny MacDonald split the Bruins' defence with two unassisted unassisted goals to give our boys a brief 3-2 lead, but the Bruins broke through again to tie it up. Scott MacDonald again found the mark, but at the end of the second period period the Bruins had scored twice more, taking the lead 5-4. The third period showed some good passing by the forwards ana some great defensive defensive plays with Scott Sawyer in net. The team, scored three goals: Brian Ball assisted by Scott MacK- ay; Scott MacDonald assisted assisted by Paul Drummond; Scott MacKny assisted by Ryan Winning. The defence of Rob MacCheyne, Chris Watson, Matt Akey, Josh Bonnetta and Mike McCrory worked hard to keep the Bruin offence from finding the not and Scott kept the boys in the game. With one minute left, the Bruins scored, making it 7-6. Try as they could, the Bruins could not tie it, so again the Auto Centre won a hard-played game. It was by far the most entertaining entertaining nockey soon this year. We hope to see a rematch rematch soon! The team missed Brad MncMastcr on defence who is out with an injury. Hurry and got well, Brad! good chance for advancement. advancement. The Toros scored just 19 seconds into the game. The goal was by Craig Rickard from Ryan Robinson and Mike Landers. The team seemed to have the first period sewed up, but our mechanics and defensive defensive skills' dropped off and the visitors tied the score with 34 seconds remaining remaining in the period. The visitors won the second second period by scoring the only goal at the mia-way point. The Toros fought back and, with 1:32 left in the game, Sean Gibbons scored from Brandon Ovenden and Ryan Robinson, giving the Toros the draw. Chad Vanderende was the MVP. This tournament was not like the tournament in Unionville Unionville where we played with only seven forwards, four defence and two goalies and were very successful. In the Cobourg tournament, the Toros iced a full squad. The bojs did play some ■y good and promising :key. They also had some ver hockey - . They also very undisciplined play and unfortunately this usually costs you in the game of Hockey. As this team has come up through the ranks-novice to atom to peewee- they now have nine new faces that have not been part of this squad over the years. This team has the potential potential to be winners, but the players must develop self- discipline, as the coaching staff develops their skills and builds tneir confidence, rewarding both sides of the operation in winning and having fun. Prior to the Cobourg tournament, tournament, the Toros hosted Lindsay on November 10 and played to a 1-1 draw. Derek Smith from Sean Gibbons Gibbons got the lone goal for the Toros. On Monday, November 12, the Toros travelled to Stouffville for a re-match of a very undisciplined game played just two weeks prior to this one, with Bowman- ville pulling their team from the ice with eight minutes remaining in the second period. period. This game, as in previous games, lacked a lot of defensive defensive skills as well as offensive offensive ability to score goals and the end result was a loss and another learning experience. The game was kept to just a total of six minor penalties penalties each, plus a misconduct misconduct going to Stouffville. Sean Brown, with two goals, Ryan Robinson and Mike Landers with singles handled the scoring. The Toros held their first dance on Saturday, November November 10, and the turn out of major bantam parents was great. Thank-you. Lange's Photo Still Unbeaten We expect the bubble to burst soon, but to this point of the season Lange's remain remain unbeaten. This past weekend, we were able to chalk up three more wins on our calendar. On Friday, November 16, our opponents were Oshawa Centennial Church. Our boys came to play and the result was three goals in each of the first two periods and two in the final, while keeping our opposition off the scoreboard. Scorers were Wes Thompson, Kevin Groo- tendorst, Damien Jay, and Steve Bonneau. All four had two gaols each with Steve Bonneau, Daniel Vande- rhevden, Wes Thompson, Nick Katsikis, Damien Jay, David Chambers, Ryan Brannigan and Kevin Groo- tendorst all figuring into the assist column. Jason Bubar, Jamie Powell and Tim Bydal played well with and without without the puck and goalie Jeff Parry gave us the kind of goaltending that we have come to expect of him. Saturday, we faced off against the Checkers team coached by our friendly rival (Bashful) Bill Thrasher. The first period featured end-to- end action with neither team able to score. Checkers were playing with a short bench and while they were catching their breath in the second period we managed to score three times. Wes Thompson lit the light twice, with assists each time from Midget Selects Win 6-0 Over Port Perry After three games, the midget selects are 2-1-0, with a win and a tie against the LNHL Bruins, and a victory victory over the Port Perry 'B' squad. The 1990-91 season began began on Saturday, November 10, in Orono, as the cream of the midget house league faced off against the Oshawa LNHL Bruins. In a penalty-filled, hard fought contest which ended in a 5-5 tie, Jack Bentley paced the Bowmanville team with a goal and three assists. Other scorers were: Chris Forsey, with a rocket from the point; Dave Smith, Todd Lepard and Steve Gibbons. The boys took to the ice for game two of the young season on Sunday, November November 11, against Port Perry at the Bowmanville Arena. Backed by the solid goaltending goaltending of Roger Leblanc and Darcey Veitch and two goals and an assist from Todd Lepard. The Bowmanville Bowmanville boys gave Port Perry a real hockey lesson as they skated to a well-deserved 6- 0 victory. Other scorers were Jack Benley with a goal and three assists, Steve Gibbons, Terry Vanlondon, and Chris Forsey. In the rubber match against the Bruins, the local lads scored four quick first period goals and then held on for a 4-2 win. Steve Gibbons Gibbons scored twice and was unlucky not to got the hat- trick when he hit the post of an empty net in the last minute of play. Todd Lepard with a goal and an assist, and Craig Forsey rounded out the scoring. Once again the netminding was solid, especially Roger Leblanc, wno was nothing short of spectacular in the third period. period. Next game is Sunday, November November 26, in Port Perry. Ryan Brannigan and Jamie Powell, Kevin Grootendorst from John Ashton and David David Chambers rounded out the scoring. Checkers re-grouped in the third period resulting in a repeat of period one. Jeff Parry recorded his second straight shutout and Shawn Honeyman in Checkers' net made some excellent stops. Predictions are that injured player Mike Ferguson will be back for Checkers when we meet again and everyone is looking forward to a real barn burner of a game. Sunday found us matched against a highly rated team from Oshawa. Christ Church were our opponents opponents and they lived up to their ^reputation from the openingn.face-off..;,The first part'of- the /^ante wé were hemmed in our own end. Robert Graham, after many attempts, scored in the third period with assists by Dustin Bannerman and Brad Schultz. Canadian Tire Peewees Try to Defend Tourney The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 21,1990 9 by Nicky Watt On the weekend of November November 9-11, the Bowmanville Bowmanville Canadian Tire Peewee Toros participated in their first tournament in Bolton. The team was defending their championship from last year. It was a fun-filled weekend weekend from the very first moment. moment. Everyone arrived at the hotel except one. Rob Harness was nowhere to be seen. We all hoped to see him soon as he is a great asset. asset. As game time came closer closer they were off and racing and I mean that literally (Mr. Haynes)! Everyone arrived arrived at the Mayfield and still no Rob. The minutes ticked by and finally, about 20 minutes before game time, Rob came walking in the door and a sigh of relief was heard from the Bowmanville Bowmanville fans. All the boys were pumped up an raring to go. The first game was against Scarborough and it was expected to be a rough one. Most of the first period was even until the guys got settled into the roles they would assume for the rest of the weekend. Bowmanville's first goal was scored at 3:45 in the first period. Kevin Pickell assisted Rob Harness to put the Toros on the board with one point. Their second goal came with only seconds left in the period. Andrew Ferguson Ferguson fired a beautiful goal in the net with the help of Mike deBlois. Three minutes minutes into the second period, Greg McMurter loaded his stick with skill and the puck after a pass came from Andrew Andrew Ferguson. He then loaded the net with a goal, setting the score at 3-0. Later Later in the second, Dave Watt set up Pete Schoep who shot one past the Scarborough goalie. At 13:14, Ryan Dun- nigan made a bréak and gave a strong 5-0 lead to his team. Little has been said about the goal tending in the past articles but our goalies, Mark Lynch, and Brad Delorme, Delorme, were certainly HOT this weekend.' Mark was playing this game and he did well but unfortunately one slipped by him with only 5:52 remaining. The Toros finished the game with two excellent goals scored by Pete Schoep arid Mike deBlois! deBlois! Assisting on these goals with strong passing efforts efforts were Andrew Ferguson. Ferguson. Kevin Pickell, Jason Jackman and Luke Akey. Victory struck once as they won the first one 7-1. . This tournament consisted consisted of round-robin play,. which means there were three divisions with four teams in each division. The teams would receive half a point for tying a period, one point for tying the game, one point for winning a period and two points for winning the game. No points were awarded for a loss. The highest possible total a team could receive for one game was five. The next morning, the boys got up early, had tea and croissants at the hotel and they were bursting with energy. Beamsville was next on the list. Nobody knew quite what to expect. The game started quick as Rob Harness scored Bowmanville's Bowmanville's first goal at 8:50. Ryan Dunnigari (cute little #15) assisted on this one. Beamsville came back a minute later and tied it up. Midway through the first period, period, Dave Watt scored from the blueline with a deadly slapshot of Hamum and Adams Adams fame. This shot was assisted assisted by Jason MacLean and Greg McMurter. The rest of the game was a path paved to -victory. The final score was 7-2 and the last five goals were scored by: Jason MacLean unassisted; Jason Jackman from deBlois; deBlois; Watt from Harness and Greg Knox; McMurter from Knox and Watt; and deBlois from Pickell and Harness. Victory strikes twice. The final team that the Toros had to play in their division division was Alliston, a very tough team that thé Toros beat by one goal last year in the same tournament. The Toros only gave up two goals to Alliston in a very close game. However, Bowmanville's Bowmanville's strong offence gave them an advantage, The final final score was 3-2 and helping helping the goals get in the net were: Andrew Ferguson, Luke Akey, Brad Ormiston and Greg Knox. Goals were scored by Rob Harness and Jason Jackman with two. The Toros only gave up one point to their opponents but they won their division and wore sent on to the semi-finals, Victory strikes three times and they aren't out. Do you see a pattern forming? forming? Orangeville, a longtime rival of Bowmanville, was slotted into the semi-finals to play the Toros. They had already beaten our arch enemies, Cobourg, in this tournament. Orangeville scored the first goal very late in the first period. Bowmanville didn't get down on them-- selves and they managed to tie it up halfway through the second. The score remained remained even until 23 seconds seconds into the final period when the Toros scored on a powerplay taking the lead for the first time in the game. About twenty seconds had passed when Orangeville Orangeville again set the score even. Bowmanville fans screamed their hearts out and the guys did not let us down. In a whirlwind of power, they scored three goals in less than two minutes. minutes. They held the mighty Orangeville team off until the end of the game, finalizing finalizing the score at 5-2. Assisting Assisting on goals were Kevin Pickell, Ryan Dunnigan, Dave Watt, and Greg McMurter. Scoring spectacular spectacular goals were Greg McMurter, McMurter, Rob Harness (2), and Mike deBlois (2). Thank-you to Mike for that great victory victory dance as it struck again. Definite pattern. They made it! The Toros were, scheduled to play the mean hometown team of Bolton. The game started slow and it was scoreless until 4:09 when Bolton scored. Their fans went wild and we were all very optimistic. The Toros didn't tie it up until Rob Harness scored off of passes from Greg McMurter and Jason Jackman at 12:30 in the third period. The fans were ecstatic and as the players pumped the fans, the fans got the going with their tremendous cheering efforts. Then, without warning, warning, Rob Harness pulled another another one out of the bag. Assisting Assisting on the goal that made the score 2-1 was Brad Ormiston. Jason Jackman scored unassisted and again Rob Harness scored his third goal of the game for a hat trick. Bowmanville took it home again! Victory is sweet and the Toros know it as they remain masters of the Bolton tournament once again. It was a great weekend and we were all proud of the guys because they did their Best. The team wishes a quick recovery to an Oshawa player who was seriously hurt in the tournament. I've heard that he is doing well but we don't know if he is back on the ice yet.
