Stacey Thompson, a student student at Clarke High School, reports on the conference he attended: On October 26,1 attended attended the Education Futures Conference at Trent University University in Peterborough. I received received a ride to Peterborough Peterborough by a mother who lives in Orono. She was also attending attending the conference. Once we entered Weryack Theatre, a part of tient where the conference took place, I was given a folder with my name on it. This folder contained an agenda of the conference and the names of the people in my discussion group. First on the agenda was a speech by Dr. Walter Pitman. Pitman. His speech was entitled entitled "What it Means to be an Educated person in the Future." Future." Dr. Pitman gave a powerful and inspirational speech about his expectations expectations of the future of the world. What he sees for the future is a workable global economy and education that is strongly linked to environmentalism. environmentalism. He wants education education to teach our children how to think for themselves. For education to do this he gave us seven guidelines to work towards. After the speech, all the people in the theatre were tola to go to their separate discussion groups. I was in group four. Each group was first asked to discuss the positive and negative aspects aspects of today's education system. All the discussion groups met back at the theatre for a snack. Within 15 minutes, we were back in our groups, discussing the next question which was, "What are the major trends affecting the future of society?" The groups met at the theatre after lunch for another another speech. The speech was given by Mr. Richard Barker, a General Electric company representative. The topic of his speech was "Crystal Ball Gazing - Futuristic Futuristic Perspective." We entered entered our discussion groups for another hour and discussed discussed the question, "In what ways can the education education system address the trends of society? In between "three o'clock and three-thirty all the groups met at the theatre for "Reflection of the Conference." Conference." A representative from each of the four discussion groups gave an answer for one of the four questions, asked of the groups. My group contained parents, parents, teachers, business people people and myself, a student. At times we argued priorities and the role of education but we came up with a mutually agreeable conclusion. This conclusion was that education education is doing well at the moment moment but as in the business world, education should reflect reflect current trends of society society and business.
