Report Presented Soon The draft recommendations of the Newcastle Liaison Committee regarding regarding the future of the Port Granby nuclear nuclear waste site will be presented to the Town of Newcastle next Monday. The committee's recommendations are part of a task force studying the removal of waste at the Port Granby site. Larry Sherman, from the I.B.I. Group, a consulting firm obtained by the NLC to complete phase three of the siting task force study, told Newcastle Newcastle Council Monday that the process process is extensive. He said recommendations from Port Hope and other municipalities have already already been submitted to the federal government and that Newcastle is the last to submit its findings. . He explained that the deadline for the recommendations is the end of the year. The NLC know the importance of moving onto the fourth phase although that pnase in the siting task force is not clearly defined yet. One condition he would like to see established before moving into the fourth stage, he said, is some type of agreement between council and the federal government. "I would like to have some kind of terms in there asking council to be involved involved in some type of agreement . about phase four," Mr. Sherman said. He further said a document is before before the federal cabinet recommending communities involved proceed to phase 4. Mayor Marie Hubbard told Mr. Sherman that the Town of Newcastle is committed to having the waste removed removed from Port Granby. Councillor Diane Hamre said "we didn't create the garbage there and it's not our responsibility to bear the cost" of moving it. She noted that there is a concern about the costs involved with the NLG. Recommendations from the NLC committee will be presented to council at next Monday's council meeting.
