Slow Start for Halminen by Nicky Watt As I was tidying up my work space, I found a few loose ends worth sharing. The first was a game played in Port Perry on November 7. The game was dominated by Bowmanville as they swept the board 12-2. Goals were scored by Mike DeBlois (2), Brad Ormiston (2), an- drew Ferguson (1), Jason Jackman (2), Greg McMurt- er (1), Kevin Pickell (1), Ryan Dunnigan (2), Luke Alcey (1). The Toros swept the board and Mark Lynch maintained a Bowmanville shut-out. Great goals could not be scored without great assists that were made by Andrew Ferguson, Brad Ormiston, Ormiston, Peter Schoep, Greg Knox, Jason Jackman, Kevin Kevin Pickell, Dave Watt and Rob Harness. Making up the eight points were Ryan Dunnigan Dunnigan (1), Jason Jackman (1), Rob Harness (2), Peter Schoep (2), Greg McMurter (1), and Brad Ormiston (1). Harness, Ferguson, Jack- man, Pickell, Scheop, McMurter, Knox and Ormiston Ormiston assisted on goals scored by Schoep, Jackman (2), Ormiston, Ormiston, Harness and Ferguson Ferguson (2). • In the last article I mentioned mentioned cute little #15 Ryan Dunnigan. I would like to retract retract this statement. Ryan is a great guy, with a big spirit. spirit. He's rough, tough and never gives up. He is probably probably one of the hardest workers on the team. Sorry about that Ryan! This weekend, the team heads to Saltfleet for a chance to bring home another another tournament champion ship title. I'll be there getting getting the stats and opinions on the game. It should be a very promising weekend with lots of action. Good luck boys! Again I would like to point out the present goal tending. Brad Delorme and Mark Lynch are puck stoppers extraordinaire. Aquatic Club Happenings >pe of a hard fought game was lgers 3, Graf- Hull, Allan Barnes, Robert Graham and Dustin Banner- man showed great determination determination by pressing the play and shooting the puck at every chance. Brandon Klawitter had a hot stick, scoring five goals with assists by Brad Schultz, Chad Joskoski and Ryan McKnight. Robert Graham Graham notched a hat-trick un-, assisted and also assisted on a goal by Tom Jennings. Despite the score. Sport Shop goalie Michael Lambert Lambert made some great saves. Near the end of tne third period, period, he got a standing ovation,, ovation,, making one of the most spectacular glove-hand saves of the season. Final score was 9-0 for Young Drivers. After participating in the Cobourg tournament the previous weekend, the team travelled the 401 once again to meet Cobourg in a regular league game. The enthusiasm enthusiasm in the dressing room Ï irior to game definitely was ost by the time the boys hit the ice. With absolutely no drive in our pre-game warm up, the teams faced off and I am sure that goalie Chris McCarthy thought we forgot to send five skaters on at any one time during the first period. After one period, Cobourg Cobourg held the edge in the play and also a 2-0 lead. The Toros started to come alive in the second, but could not capitalize on their opportunities and Cobourg managed one more goal to hold a 3-0 lead after two periods. periods. Cobourg jumped out in front 4-0 before Vanderende from Brown and Robinson put Bowmanville on the score sheet. The hardhitting, hardhitting, fast skating Co- boUrg team scored once again before Brown from Ovenden and Smith rounded out the score. Toros 3-Cobourg 2 It was Cobourg's turn to accurate, at a much improved improved rate. The team played at home against Stouffville on Tuesday, Tuesday, November 27, and are gearing up for a good showing showing in the Belleville tournament tournament this weekend. The atti tude of the players, coaching staff and parents must be positive, and togetherness will be a key factor as the season progresses. At this point the Halminen Halminen Homes Dantam s are 11-9- 4. Newcastle Gruffies Skates to 10-0 Win travel up the four-lane high- ' to play a different Toros i. The parents played an way 1 team. important "role in this" game as they must in the future. They stayed grouped together together and were very vocal in a positive manner. This definitely definitely gave the boys a lift that they deserved. The teams each scored once in the first frame with Gibbons from Rickard and Cramm scoring for the home town. They accounted for a single marker each in the second period. This time, it was Ovenden on a slap shot from the blue line that sailed over the shoulder of the Cobourg goalie, Rickard and Robinson assisting. . The third frame saw only one goal, the winner and the second of the game for Gibbons, Gibbons, but not before Brown worked hard from the comer to the back of the net to shovel the puck to Gibbons in front. This was the third meeting meeting between these two clubs this season with the Toros holding the edge two games to one. A very tough and disciplined disciplined hockey club is Cobourg Cobourg which shows the type of hockey our team is capable capable of playing. Toros 9-Etobicoke 1 A team that Cobourg edged just 3-2 in their own tournament the previous week, this team arrived at the Darlington Arena understaffed understaffed and were definitely no match for the Toros who were on a high from defeating defeating Cobourg less than 24 hours earlier. The team played with confidence and Craig Rickard Rickard potted the team's first three-goal performance of the year. The team showed its real Newcastle colors with the boys from all the centres taking part in the scoring. Period one saw Rickard score twice and Brown picking picking up a single; assisting was Stephenson (2), Flint»ft, Ovenden, Robinson one each. In the second frame, it was Gibbons from Brown and Rickard from Vnnde- rende and Robinson. The third period saw the Toros move the puck with a lot of confidence, scoring four more insurance markers by FlintolT, Stephenson, Stacey and Smith with assists going going to Robinson (2), Stacey, Brown, Vanderende, Ovenden Ovenden and Smith with one each. The team must have had their cars on _ during the mid-week practice, especially especially the defence wlio moved the puck from their zone quickly and the passes were On November 20, the Newcastle Gruffies' atoms played host to Bewdley. The game turned out to be onesided, onesided, with Gruffies coming away 10-0 winners. Goal- tender Jesse Anger played a solid game and was rewarded rewarded with his .first shut-out. The opponent was Baltimore and they, too, had come to win. But with Baltimore Baltimore leading 6-2, and 4:00 minutes left in the second period, Newcastle Gruffies started their comeback. Tommy Gillan scored twice and Darryl Wright added another to bring the team within one at the end of the period. Baltimore scored early in the third and put Newcastle down 7-5, but with the time clock showing eight minutes remaining, Darryl took over and scored twice to force overtime. After about three minutes of sudden death, Darryl again proved to be the star by scoring with 2:15 to go. The next game took place at 5:00 p.m. on November 25 against Radio Shack from Cobourg. Our guys won easily, easily, 6-1, but the scoring didn't start until half way through the game. When it was over, Darryl had tallied five times and Tommy once. Assists were given to Chris Druery, Jimmy Thompson, goalie Jesse Anger, and Donald Baker with two. In the championship game at 7:00 p.m., Newcastle Newcastle again had to go into overtime, overtime, but now it was with a high-flying Hydro team from Bowmanville. This game went both ways for most of the time, and with Newcastle holding a 7-4 lead late in the game, Hydro came storming back to tie it with 1:55 left. The teams battled in overtime for six minutes before before Tommy Gillan broke out to fee Darryl Wright, who managed to squeeze a shot past the Bowmanville netminder and give Newcastle Newcastle Gruffies' atoms the championship.
