Support for Participation House ■ I am writing to you as a concerned citizen of Bowmanville, Bowmanville, regarding the recent recent rejection by Newcastle's Town Council of the application application by Participation House Project (Durham Inc.) for a 40-unit townhouse project in Bowmanville. Participation House has owned the parcel of land for many years. Their intention to build supportive housing for persons with disabilities was well known and understood understood by many, including the local politicians! The issue of housing which is affordable, accessible accessible and decent is of great importance importance to ■ persons who nave physical and mental disabilities. Most people with disabilities are unable to obtain meaningful employment employment which pays them a decent wage. Consequently, they must rely on social assistance assistance for their income. Because their social assistance assistance income is so paltry, they are forced to obtain- housing which is subsidized. The Participation House project was to provide subsidized subsidized accommodation for 10 people with disabilities in the five wheelchair accessible accessible units. The remaining units were to provide a mixture mixture of market rent units and rent-geared-to-income units for families who require require subsidized housing. There are many people in Durham Region, including the Town of Newcastle, who are desperately in need of affordable housing. Some are single parent families, others are two parent families families who have low paying jobs and others are now on social assistance due to the poor economic conditions in Ontario at this time. I wish to express my sadness sadness and anger that Newcastle Newcastle Town Council has rejected rejected a housing project which would have provided opportunities opportunities for many to enjoy decent, affordable housing.
