2 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 6,1991 Section Two Local Artist Shocked By Recent Editorial be showing my paintings and reliefs in May at the I am a visual artist who lives in Newcastle and will fs lay at the Newcastle Visual Arts Centre's Centre's Mill Gallery. I was naturally naturally shocked and offended by the tone of a recent article article and its self-righteous and savage attack on the centre's centre's local showing policy. The whole premise of the article article was unfounded and the writer had obviously not researched researched the facts thoroughly thoroughly .'With affected and pretentious pretentious know-how, they even questioned the town's funding funding of the centre to support their absurd claim that the local arts community was ignored ignored by the centre. The paper has, in fact, done our arts community much damage damage by publishing such a long and fatuous article. A diatribe of this sort flies in EDITOR'S NOTE: Is it possible possible that we've been reading reading two different editorials? The editorial attempted to ensure that we were in no way criticizing the programs offered at the Visual Arts Centre. That is why it said: "our comments do not relate to the ongoing programs that are offered by the "Visual "Visual Arts Centre." We agree that the public has been well-served by the classes and seminars offered there. Our criticism -- if you can call it that -- was directed directed at the make-u^ of the the face of the excellent programming programming that is being done at the centre and is a wholly unjustified smear, couched in the protective garb of a "concerned citizen. This Visual Arts Centre does offer several venues for showing work, all of which are wide open to local and regional artists, art students, students, and hobbyists. The institution institution serves the growing population of Newcastle ana deserves our interest and support to meet that challenge. challenge. Rather than undermining undermining community support for the visual arts, the paper should feature the centre positively and help encourage encourage community involvement and use of an excellent facility. facility. Tony Cooper, Mill St., Orono, Ont. Orono Artist Disagrees With VAC. Editorial In Recent Statesman Dear Editor: As a local artist residing within the boundaries of the Town of Newcastle, I feel the need to respond to your article "Local Angle for Artists." Artists." I can only conclude that a full consensus of the situation was not conducted before this publication. Because Because I am showing at the VAC in the spring, the statement statement "Perhaps one show per year could feature work by persons who are residents of the municipality" is clearly false. The purpose of good reporting requires some checking beforehand, in this case checking the show schedule at the Visual Arts Centre. Perhaps the newspaper newspaper should consider inviting inviting individuals a little more various exhibits at the Centre. Centre. We suggested that more emphasis could be placed on the work of local artists who live and work within the boundaries of this munici- pal & This is because of the fact that our gut feeling, after attending attending shows in recent years, is that many of the award-winners and artists come from places well beyond beyond the Town of Newcastle. In fact, the Visual Arts Centre Centre has confirmed that our hunch is correct by advising us in a letter last week that "We've been keeping Bowmanville and area residents warm for over 60 years!" • Top quality Imperial Oil products for Domestic, Industrial and Rural use. • Automatic delivery maintained by a fleet of modem tanker trucks. • We sell portable heater fuel. • Dependable 24-hour service. And by that, we would understand that it serves the needs of the Durham Durham Region. ' You might say that we disagree with that philosophy. philosophy. But it is our right to do so. Such things happen in a democracy. If you read the editorial carefully, you may have noticed noticed that we did not say local local artists weren't represented. represented. Nor did we say they were badly represented. Nor aid we suggest that the centre ought to focus only on local artists. But we did suggest that they could be given greater exposure. ■ Hence, the suggestion that one show per year might feature feature only work by people who jive within the geographical geographical boundaries of the municipality. One of the above letters suggests that we don't i believe a single show focused on a local artist. artist. Of course, that's not the case. We are well aware that several local artists have had individual shows at the Visual Arts Centre. Please keep in mind that what we were expressing is an opinion. It continues to be our opinion. But, we might add, that it is one of many viewpoints expressed in the community on any given day. And certainly it is not an attempt to undermine undermine the foundations of art in the western hemisphere. Naturally, the operation of the Visual Arts Centre is the business of its board of directors, the local arts community community and the general public. public. It is these groups which , decide how the Centre operates. operates. Not us. But we do not believe the local arts community is above criticism. Although you obviously would disa- f ree, we endeavoured to eep our criticism in the "constructive" category. We, at The Statesman, endeavour endeavour to give the arts all the exposure possible. But surely surely our role is not to give a involved with the town's cultural cultural institutions, to report to the paper on such matters. matters. The Visual Arts Centre is not only meeting the needs of the community and its artists but is constantly trying trying to upgrade these services services by talking to artists. The centre is an active network of people that reflects a growing community. As the Town of Newcastle expands through development surely we would like our institutions institutions to reflect such growth. Artists do not work in a vacuum vacuum and find work from outside outside one's area a necessary lifeline to communication and enhancement of their own work. Maralynn Cherry, local artist, Orono standing ovation to every action action that artists or arts agencies perform. The editorial to which you refer was not a news article article but an opinion piece. If it was, indeed, a "negative" article, it may have been the first time that such an article article about the Visual Arts Centre has appeared during the history of this paper. And any institution which can escape media criticism for that length of time has /ell. done very wet In our news coverage of events taking place at the Visual Arts Centre, we have constantly worked towards providing coverage of seminars, seminars, open houses, and show openings. We have written features and published columns, columns, and printed countless news releases related to the time and place of Visual Arts Centre happenings. In short, we have done as much as possible to cover the local arts scene. And -- unless the holding of a contrary opinion renders renders us persona non grata in the eyes of the Visual Arts Centre -- we will continue to support the arts and artists artists through providing timely timely information about this worthwhile sector of the community. We thank all of those who have expressed opinions on this matter. Dear Mayor Hubbard and Town Councillors: On behalf of the Animal Alliance of Canada and the hundreds of Newcastle residents residents who signed petitions urging a ban on the sale of Newcastle pets for experimentation, experimentation, I am writing to express our disappointment with your decision to continue continue selling pound animals to the University of Toronto. The debates at the January January 7th and 14th Council meetings were characterized by researchers intent upon attacking the credibility and motives of people whose goal Is better protection of animals. animals. Likewise, those who spoke against the ban confused confused the entire issue of animals animals used in research with the true issue before your council. Our group is not naive enough to believe that we can eliminate the use of animalism animalism research overnight. We do, however, feel that the use of pets in experimentation experimentation ana teaching can and should be prohibited in a society society whicn values compassion compassion as an underlying principle. principle. Ask them how the cats, perhaps from your pound, have had their brain stems cut so that they cannot move. Ask them why their heads are then immobilized immobilized by inserting rods into their skulls via a stereotaxic device.
