Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 6,1991 3 Coupon Clipper Forms Her Own Club $1,000 Seed for Good Neighbors by Andrea Adair Although she may not know it, Laura Henderson is a waste diverter. The Bowmanville resident, resident, every day, stops hundreds hundreds of product coupons from going into landfill sites by recycling them. For four years she has been running a successful coupon exchange club where unwanted coupons are exchanged exchanged for ones that will be used. "I have literally thousands thousands of coupons. I wouldn't want to count them," she laughed, during a recent interview. interview. Laura's club took shape after the birth of her first child. She always used coupons as a means of saving money on her groceries each week. When she left her fulltime fulltime job to look after her daughter, she found she was bored. Many Members Having heard about such exchange clubs, she thought she would, just for fun, start one of her own. After placing a a brief letter letter in a major Toronto daily newspaper, the Clip and Save Coupon Exchange was born. Members joined from as far east as Halifax and as far west as Vancouver. "I keep it simple," she ex- ilained, noting that one of e purposes of the club is to have fun. Members send her a list of the items they use frequently, frequently, along with $10 worth of unwanted coupons. Laura, in return, will send the member the equivalent value of coupons for products products the member uses or wants. "The coupons are all for products the person will use," she said. "It's fun.- It's something I e started and it works." But it does require a lot of time. She spends sometimes between between three and four hours a night filling orders and organizing organizing her files. And she relies on donations donations from family members or people in the community who don't use coupons. "I can't believe the good nature of people. They write and don't want coupons back but send some in. That's what makes it the success it is," she said. Save Hundreds Although she hasn't kept track of now much money she saves by using coupons, she noted that other members members of the club have. They have written to tell her they saved hundreds of dollars on their yearly grocery bill. "The most I ever saved was $23 in one week." But to save money, she We're open for if MS 1 11 ■ Bank of Montreal 1 contributions. VçiAvy ûû Bank of Montreal 2 King St. W. By using a rebate coupon, a two-for-one coupon and buying a brand of toothpaste when it was on sale, Laura ended up with three tubes of toothpaste without spending any money. "You can get some really good deals sometimes if you watch for sales and use your courrons wisely." She also suggests that you make a list before you go grocery shopping and note whether you nave coupons coupons for items on the list. Keep the coupons in a separate wallet and take each coupon out when you pick up the item instead of at the cash register where you would hold up other shoppers and the cashiers. "You can save up to 10 per cent or more...It depends on how much time you want to devote to it," she noted. In addition to the time spent on coupon clipping and list filling, Laura has found herself with a new list of pen pals. Many of the people in the club write to her, sharing news about their lives. One such member was a Markham lady Laura saved UPC labels. Wheel of Fortune The woman used the labels labels to enter a Wheel of Fortune Fortune contest. The Markham resident won, went on the show, and won $60,000. Locally, she has met a few of the members in the club too. But she adds that she has never met anyone further away than Toronto. "It's nice to start something something and have it work out," Laura said about the club, noting that she has a lot of fun with her hobby. • Other people like it too. The club is now 400 members members strong. But new members of the Clip and Save Coupon Exchange Exchange are always welcome. The Province of Ontario is offering $1,000 in "seed money" to launch the "Good Neighbours" program in' communities throughout Ontario. In the Town of Newcastle, Newcastle, a committee has been formed to take the first steps towards launching the program here. Good Neighbours, a program program designed to meet social social service-related needs in a community, was created by the provincial Ministry of Seniors Affairs. The administrators at Community Care, Roxy Barnes and Sally Barrie, decided decided to investigate the possibility possibility of establishing such a program in the Town of Newcastle. The two had a meeting with a representative from the Good Neighbours program program who explained that the Good Neighbours committee committee in communities is only an initiator of projects. The committee is designed designed to talk to other community community groups to encourage them to point out the needs of the community. "It takes the onus off the committee. They can make recommendations and see what the needs of the community community are," Ms Barnes said. She said a lot of what is needed is information sharing. sharing. At a meeting last week, where the program was introduced introduced to members of various various organizations in the town, some types of good neighbours projects were suggested. The library discussed possibly possibly providing a delivery" service for shut-ins. Another suggestion was for a support group for newcomers newcomers in the area. ■ "Different groups might do different projects and call it a Good Neighbours project," project," Ms Barnes added. Members of the committee committee include representatives from various segments of the community such as the public health unit, YWCA and Big Brothers, and the Royal Bank. The Royal Bank and Shoppers Drug Mart are corporate sponsors of the program at tne provincial provincial level.
