Teachers Become Students on P.D. Days by Laura J: Richards What happens when teachers become the students? students? In the case of a workshop workshop held in Bowmanville last week, the, result was lots of fun and creativity! On Jan. 31, at three different different locations in Bowmanville, Bowmanville, two groups of separate school board teachers became became art students during their Professional Development Development Day. It wasn't a holiday. holiday. They worked and learned from their artful experiences. experiences. "We hope that the teachers teachers will learn and use the knowledge gained in the day's workshops back in their own classrooms," said Mary-Claire Ryan, Visual Arts and Drama Consultant with the separate school board. "We thought that they would'be the ones who would most benefit from hands-on workshops like the ones developed for today." Four workshops in Bowmanville Bowmanville provided teachers in this area of the Peterborough, Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Separate Separate School Board tne opportunity to experience and experiment with art. In Ms. Ryan's words, they were "Taking a Bath in the Arts." The morning and afternoon afternoon groups were able to gain insights into how to do different crafts with their students while providing a creative learning environment environment The morning groups were involved in printmaking printmaking and simple sculptures, sculptures, while the afternoon workshops delved into paper-making and working with color transfers. A group of teachers under the direction of printmaker Andrea Anne Fosse were provided with basic printmaking printmaking information, paints, rollers, and styrofoam sheets. Then they were on their own. Most teachers etched scenes into the Styrofoam sheets and then rolled ink onto them. Some afterwards washed their sheets off and etched more figures onto their drawings and then added more paint. Ms. Fosse also showed students how to create blends of colors by using white paint and an eggplant color of purple. By applying the two colors on the same sheet of glass but to the side of each other she was able to create a blend rather than a melting of shades. Another group of students students explored the process of simple sculpture with sculptor sculptor Bill Fraser. Groups of students helped each other create a quilt design, a giraffe giraffe or two, a house ana a variety of other objects while re-using a number of different different items. Thin rope, paper, irregularly-cut pieces of wood, buttons, glue guns, staple guns and lots of paints in different colors make up the items used by the teachers. The afternoon workshop on paper-making demonstrated demonstrated the re-use of paper products including construction construction paper and egg cartons.
