On Sunday afternoon, many well wishers gathered in the basement of Newton- ville United Church to honor a man of many talents and friends.who was celebrating celebrating his 90th birthday. Valentine's Day Events At M.J. Hobbs School We have now successfully survived January and are progressing smoothly through February. Valentines Day has come and gone with no severe emotional upsets. Miss Wag-, enaar and Miss Johnston organized organized a veiw enjoyable Valentine exchange and dance, which was held during during the lunch hour on Thurs., Feb. 14th. A large number of our students are involved with the Read-a-thon, with proceeds proceeds from the sponsors going going to help Muscular Dystrophy Dystrophy research. Mr. Cavanagh from the Knights of Columbus, conducted conducted a free throw competition'in competition'in our "gym on Mon day, February 18th. Over 100 students participated, with the highest scores from each age group competing with students from other schools. The senior boys' and girls' basketball teams have completed completed their schedule, with both teams having a 5-1 record. The girls scored over 50 points in two games while the boys netted 90 pts. in one game. Their playoffs will be held this week and next. The grade seven boys' and girls v teams will participate participate in a tournament run by Mr. Harris of Bowmanville Senior, and Mr. Webster of M. J. Hobbs at Bowmanville H.S., and Bowmanville Sr. on Wednesday evening March 6th. As you may notice from our updates, M. J. Hobbs is a veiy active and involved school. Our former vic- principal Mr. R. Tuttle has returned to us as our principal. principal. He and Mrs. S. Medd form a dynamic duo who support our active life style. Mr. Tuttle believes strongly in child-centered education which encourages every individual student to reach his or her potential. He also believes that parents parents and teachers are "partners "partners in education," and that we all want what is best for the young people in our care.
