The guest speaker for the meeting was Marion Kirkwood, Kirkwood, and she was one "of 8 United Church women to visit the women of the National National Council of Churches of Kenya from Nov. 5-17, 1990. Marion and her family were formerly United Church overseas personnel in Zambia. Many of those present will remember her tor her excellent leadership in music and story from the Ontario Women's Conferences, Conferences, Waterloo, 1990. Marion is presently on sabbatical from Metro Toronto school board. A delicious luncheon was much appreciated by all present. Dorothy Robinson, our leader, read a timely poem on "March" telling us the flower for March "The Daffodil" Daffodil" and our birthstone is "Aquamarine." Dorothy Barnett gave us an interesting resume of the annual Presbyterial U.C.W. meeting, held this year in Port Perry. An excellent programme programme and guest was thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed by all. The ladies of Unit #1 are catering to the upcoming D.H.I.C. banquet on March 29 at 12:00 p.m. Our general U.C.W. meeting is Thurs., March 28 in the main hall. The Committee Committee in charge of this meeting is Bertha White, Violet Violet Dunlop and Barbara Hannah. The theme of devotions was "Self Denial". Following the singing of the hymn "Count Your Many Blessings", Blessings", Bertha read an article "Lord Help Me" and Violet read scripture readings. More than 36 million Easter Seals will be mailed to households across Canada as part of the fund-raising drive. The Bowmanville Rotary Club advises advises us that this year's local goal is $20,000. You are asked to drop off your envelope at the Bowmanville branch of the Bank of Montreal, so that fund-raisers can save on the cost of mailing. The Easter Seal Society Society serves over 7,700 Ontario children with physical disabilities. The society employs 40 Easter Seals nurses nurses in 23 offices within the province. It provides financial financial assistance, treatment and services. SPRING DANCE - The Tyrone United Church will hold its annual Spring Dance on Saturday, April 6. It starts at 8:30 p.m. and will be held at the Tyrone Community Centre. The D.J. will be Frank Barkey and the evening will include a light lunch and prizes. BIG SCIENCE FAIR - The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education will host a Science Fair on Saturday, April 13, in Port Hope. Students from across the Board's jurisdiction will be represented. Projects from kindergarten to grade three will be presented presented at the Dr. L. B. Powers Public School from 11 a.m. to 11:30. And Port Hope High School will host the displays from grade four to secondary school between between the hours of noon and 2:30 p.m. Last year, five students and four projects were selected from Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle to compete at a Canada- Wide Science Fair in Windsor. The students earned two gold medals and one honorable mention at the Canadian Canadian science fair. URANIUM FILM -'- A National Film Board of .Canada .Canada production entitled "Uranium" will be shown this evening (Wednesday, March 13) at the Whitby Public Library. It will be presented by Durham Nuclear Awareness and admission is free. The film will be shown at eight p.m. STICKY FINGERS -- Parents wondering what to do with the kids during the March school break may wish to visit the Maple Syrup Demonstration at the Purple Woods Conservation Area. Staff from the Central Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority will lead free tours of the sugarbush, illustrating Indian, pioneer, pioneer, and modern methods of producing maple syrup. Tours leave from the conservation area parking lot at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. from March 11 to 15. Tours ana demonstrations will also be offered on the following weekends: March 16-17 and March 29-April 1. BIG BANDS - Here's a film of interest to those who appreciate music from the heyday of Big Bands. Rare films featuring music of Harry James, Buddy Rogers and Ray Sinatra will be screened at the McLaughlin. Gallery in Oshawa on Thursday, March 21, at two p.m. The footage was shot during 1942-43 at the Skyline Skyline club, in New York City. Admission is free, but tickets are required. WATERFOWL WEEKENDS -- Waterfowl viewing weekends will take place at Presqu'île Provincial Park on March 23 and 24 and March 29 to April 1. Bird watchers and those who would like to be bird watchers watchers are invited to come out and view the up to 25 species species of ducks, geese and swans returning to Canada after their winter in the south. Viewing stations are set up at the park, along with volunteers to identify the different birds. An admission fco will be charged, MAPLE SYRUP FEST -- The Great Pine Ridge Kinsmen will be hosting a Maple Syrup Festival at the Alan Downes farm on Sunday, March 17. The event begins at nine a.m. and the menu includes sausage sausage and pancakes, fresh maple syrup, hot chocolate and coffee. There will be a small animal petting area and horse-drawn sleigh rides. The farm is located one kilometre east of the Kirby Ski Hill on Regional Road Nine. A small fee will be charged. PUBLIC SKATING THURSDAY - The Great Pine Ridge Kinsmen Club will be offering free public skating skating on Thursday, March 14, in the Orono Arena.
