I 4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, March 13,1991 Orator Wins Award for Touching Story By Tiana Knox What would you do if you found out your brother or sister had a life threatening disease? That disease happens happens to be cancer. When my younger brother was bom, he was taken to Toronto Sick Children's Hospital with an abdominal obstruction. obstruction. This means a blockage in the bowel. With medical care my brother made it, only to be diagnosed on his second birthday with cancer of the kidneys. All of a sudden sudden my family's life was at stake. When Derrick did not come home with my parents, from that day on, I knew that life would never be the same. I learned a new meaning meaning of life that remains with me today. My brother went through fifteen months of intensified chemotherapy, radiation treatments and eleven operations operations to save his life. Chemotherapy Chemotherapy is chemicals used to fight cancer and radiation is intense x-rays. Yes, Derrick lost his hair, became pale and was weak, but he was the centre of my heart. I took Derrick on one of his few visits to home from the hospital to the park where children teased him because he had no hair. It was sad to see him standing there unable to defend himself. himself. I'll never forget the things they said to him. "Who ran the lawnmower over your head?" or they pulled off his hat and said, 'Look, he has no hair! He's going to die!" The feelings that I had inside of me made me so angry. I put Derrick in his stroller and ran home. I learned later that Derrick's Derrick's hair would grow back, so the kids that teased him did not bother me as I knew that he was going to be OK. Derrick is a fighter as any child fighting for his life would be. Unfortunately, an accident accident happened where the chemotherapy drugs leaked into his chest. This meant he was burned from the inside inside out. He was on life support support systems for weeks. I prayed if there was a God in neaven, please let him live. Thanks to my prayers and the courage of my little brother, he made it. It has been a year now since Derrick's accident and undergoing chemotherapy treatment. I feel things are back to normal again. Derrick Derrick is attending Junior Kin- ■ dergarten now and my mom is attending Durham College College of Nursing. I know Derrick Derrick has helped my mother in her decision to return to school in hopes of helping other unfortunate families some day. I know, in my heart, Derrick Derrick will be fine now and I have also learned just how important my family means to me. Thanks to the support support of friends, doctors, and nurses of T.S.C. Hospital, Derrick is still able to be with us today. Oh, he can be a pain in the butt sometimes, but he is my brother and my little friend. Bette Midler sang in a song, "Did you every know that you're my hero?" Derrick Derrick is my hero for the fight that he continues to battle against cancer. In Canada we enjoy the right and privilege of Freedom Freedom of Speech and, as far as we know, considerable Freedom Freedom of the Press. If you wish to disagree with the Government Government of the day, you will not disappear in the night. Nonetheless, for the collective collective good of society, it was deemed both fair and wise to limit those freedoms by a law against the distribution of material whose purpose might be to incite racial hatred hatred or single out a minority group for attack. We can never be completely completely protected from the Zundels and Keegstras of this world, but I was still shocked that the Independent Independent would allow itself to be complicitous in the victimization victimization of one of the founding peoples of this country: the In these difficult times when Canada is being torn apart, it is appalling that the Independent would give any space, let alone Front- Page Headline coverage, to the abhorrent views expressed expressed by Mr. Robert E. Stiles in "New Budget Brings Blast From Reader," Wednesday, March 6. 1991. One can only charitably assume assume that the Editor was sleeping at the switch. Mr. Stiles is - and there are not many who aren't - unhappy with the Mulron- ey government; however, he turns his ill-researched and poorly balanced "exposé" of the government funding to the Province of Quebec into a diatribe against "the French." Were you to substitute the word "Black" or "Jew" each time Mr. Stiles mentioned mentioned "Frenchmen" or "the French," you would find yourself in a Human/Civil Rights Commission suit so fast, it would leave your heads spinning. In fact, you may still - depending on how soon the Independent's public public apology is printed. My friends and colleague, colleague, a transplanted "Frenchnjap" who lives not far from'lMr. Stileti, threw your March 5th issue on my desk, saying that it is ignorant ignorant attitudes like this which will put the final nails in Canada's coffin. I'm afraid he is right. Yours trul; Mary B. Toronto. and 44 II FINALLY FOUND A GREAT DIET THAT WORKED FOR ME." "I'm happy and excited that I did it. We wish him luck and must admit we felt that Mr. Stiles was certainly in a vile mood when he wrote that letter and was flailing about at those he felt were responsible for spoiling his day. Maybe we should have encouraged him to take his' diatribe to the Spicer Commission Commission as they want to hear the views of all Canadians and Mr. Stiles was quite definite definite on where he stands. Maybe he feels better now he's aired his beefs. Thanks for your letter, we're sorry you were upset. But, frankly, frankly, we are more upset by the threats being made by the French majority in Quebec to wreck this country if they don't get their own way. than we are by Mr. Stiles r 'opin- Wlion lii'lp is needed.
