Durham C.H.S. Actors Present "The Crucible" Kinette Club Picks Easter Basket Winner On March 6, 7 and 8. the students of Durham Christian Christian High School preformed the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, It is a moving and gripping play about the infamous witch trials held in Salem, Massachusetts, in the late 17th Century. The play was directed by Durham's English and Theatre Theatre Arts teacher, Kathleen Collin-Touw, who has an impressive background in drama and production. Her leadership was skillful and she still managed to have a good time with the cast, despite despite the hard work of play practice. • The play opens with Rev. Paris (Chns Schievink) leaning leaning over his daughter, Betty (Jody Bosch) who is supposedly supposedly bewitched or possessed. One is struck immediately by the single-minded tunnel vision of this religious fanatic, fanatic, in sharp contrast to the caring loving, much open- minded Rev. Hale (David Rekker). The contrast between between these two ministers was evident from their words, but even more so by the superbly executed gestures, gestures, expressions and even in their very manner of walking. The Barbados servant girl, Tituba (Adrianna Critter), Critter), who was supposed to have used her magical power, power, was most convincing. Her interpretation of the Barbados dialect was also admirable. Rachel Hiemstra, in real life a gentle , caring person, made herself entirely despicable despicable as she gave a convincing convincing performance of the conniving conniving Abigail Williams, the girl who set the horrible chain of events in motion to cover up her own mischief and to get even with a failed love affair. Dwight Shenk gave an excellent performance as the lush. Marshal Herrick. The children, played by Miriam Ponsen, Danielle Vermeer, Cynthia Switzer and Jodi Bosch, made the made hysteria they were enacting enacting seem so real it was somewhat disquieting. The elderly couple, the Nurses (Sara Reitsma and Len Veenstra) were pitiable in their feeble helplessness. The Putnams (Chris Hull and Ellen Brumwell), Giles Corey (Tim Buwalda), Chev- er (Mark Veenstra), Hopkins (Jeff Van Harmelen), Sara Good (Terrilee Pypker), Gov ernor Danforth (Peter Ous- soren), Judge Hathorne (Andrew (Andrew Zwart) were all essential in the flow of events that led to the execution execution or imprisonment of scores of innocents. Moving, at times near or to tears, partly because of the nature of their role, but mostly because of the superb quality of their acting, Jeremy Jeremy Lise and Shari Thomp- sion, played the roles of John and Elizabeth Procter. John was the man who had an affair with Abigail and then corrected the error of his ways, the man who tries to save his life by false confession, confession, but in the end finds strength of character he never never knew he had and chooses execution over lies. Elizabeth Elizabeth was the woman deeply hurt by John's dalliance, but in the end, so true to her love for him that she lets him choose death in order to be true to himself, rather than try to convince him to save his life by being less than he is. She expresses this in the dramatic and wrenchingly moving closing words of the play. " He have his goodness now. god forbid I take it from him.
