"Form Your Future." 1 Dear Mr. James: Your editorial of Wednesday, Wednesday, April 3, Two Years to Dial 905? raises several questions regarding the implementation implementation of the new area code. Many business and residence residence customers will be affected affected by this area code change. There are currently over 3.2 million telephone numbers in the 416 area and approximately half of these will be part of the new 905 area code. Customers outside of the 416 area code will be affected as well since many businesses in Ottawa, Windsor, London and other towns and cities inside and outside Ontario call the 416 area on a daily basis. We have heard from a number of our customers and for many of them this is not a simple issue. They have questions regarding advertising in the Yellow Pages, 1-800 numbers, Barber Chorus From Oshawa Places Second Oshawa Barbershoppers, and their Horseless Carri- agemen Chorus, placed second second out of 15 choruses competing competing for the Ontario championship this past weekend. Seneca College's Minkler Auditorium was the site of the contest which saw London's "Men of Accord" win first prize. Directed by Bob Irving and Harold Silver, the Oshawa Chorus sang, Opening Opening Night, On Broadway,. and Swanee. In the quartet contest, Flip Side, a Scarborough based foursome, finished first in both the finals and semi-finals, defeating 16 other groups. Flip Side's baritone is Oshawa resident Steven Armstrong, who also directs the two-time International International Champion Chorus, the Scarborough Dukes of Harmony. Bowmanville area members members of the Horseless Carri- agemen include: Glenn, Ross and Stan Allin, Howard Anyan. Gerald, Bruce and Merrill Brown, Clarence and Murray Burgess, Frank Carter, Len Clement, Elmer, Scott, Jeff and Ken Down, Greg Goodall, Les Jones, Leo McKenna, Ross McMaster, McMaster, Murray Osborne, Dan Richards, George Robertson, Larry Smith, Don Staples and Fred Yates. customer own- ed equipment and their customers perception perception that they are farther away because they are in a new area code. Some businesses, alarm companies for example, will have to make software changes in their equipment to handle the new area code. This takes time and planning. Our customers tell us that their telephone number is a critical piece of information that is used for company identification. • As many companies plan and develop their com- munications and pro- motional literature well in advance, it was imperative that they be notified well ahead of time to avoid costly reprints or disruptions to their business communications. From an environmental perspective alone we feel that i catalogues, business cards and stationery should be used up instead of discarded. discarded. By giving our customers customers over two years notice they can use up their existing existing stock of stationery and plan their reordering around, the changeover period. It is a major undertaking undertaking to split an area code. We need only to look at examples examples of area coc}e splits in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Boston, Chicago and London to realize the importance of notifying notifying customers well in advance advance of the cutover. Bell will continue its campaign campaign to educate customers within the existing 416 area, as well as those as far removed removed as a steel purchaser in Brazil or a money trader in Switzerland, about the change. I hope you now have a better appreciation for the magnitude and complexity of tnis change and why we are notifying our customers two-and-a-half years before implementation. I do want to thank you for writing an editorial on the area code split as it has helped provide our customers with an opportunity opportunity to think about the upcoming area code split.
