Led by the two-goal performance performance of Robbie Milford and outstanding goaltending from David McLinton, VG National dominated finalists All-Canadian 5-1 in the final played at Bowmanville Recreation Recreation Complex. "The boys knew it would be their last game together as a team and they put everything they had into it," said coach Dan Wilton. VG National had beaten All Canadian 4-0 in the first game of the best-of-three series series last weekend. The second second game, a thrilling, scoreless scoreless tie, set up the final Saturday. "None of the players acted acted like all they needed was another tie to win," said coach Wilton. "They played like it was they who had to overcome a four goal lead." The victory capped off an incredible comeback season for VG National. Guided by coach Wilton and assistant coaches Roger Barrett and Russ Burrows, VG National never gave up after winning just once in the first half of the season. The team began to play more competitively after Christmas, but still had the worst record of any novice team entering the playoffs. But, once in the playoff round, the team lost just twice in- eight games during the climb to the championship. championship. In Saturday's final, VG National opened the scoring early in the second period when Robbie Milford scored his first with an assist from Jesse Halik. All Canadian scored their lone goal a minute later when Jason Charbonneau was put in alone on a pass from Andrew Warren. A rash of penalties taken by All-Canadian midway through the second period proved costly as Ryan Burrows Burrows scored on a power play, assisted by Brandon Ketella and Brandon Baker. Just 40 seconds later, VG National's tough defence- man, Todd Bumstead, broke through on a breakaway and fooled All-Canadian goalie Derek Lindsay. The game was put out of reach with the fourth VG National goal of the second period, the second second by Milford. With just less than five minutes to play, Mike Gu- shulak moved in from his pc drilled VG National's fifth goal past Lindsay on passes from Kevin Copping and Brandon Kettella. In the third period, VG withstood some furious effort effort on All-Canadian's part to get back into the game, but were stymied by the furious furious checking of VG National National forwards Ryan McNulty; James Wilton, Billy Kift and Chris DesHarais. When they did manage to get out of their own end, All- Canadian were stonewalled by the defensive work of Chris Welsh, Adam Rate, Kevin Copping, Mike Gu- shulak ana Toad Bumstead.
