Sidewalk Sale Starts July 18 A TRIBUTE TO OUR "MOMMAS" . by Harvey Malcolm Each year the powers that be continue to add "Special "Special Group" designation to various days or whole • weeks: - For instance Earth Day. Just how did you observe observe this particular day - probably the same as almost every other day, by completely completely ignoring it. Not so your scribe. We made a special special occasion of it - purely by accident of course. We planted planted not one tree but four. Last year one of those large creeping evergreens that ,cover.1 sq. foot at planting had branched and spread out to cover around 10 sq. feet - give or take a centimetre centimetre or two. Anyhow, the darn thing died. Nothing much can be uglier than a 10 sq. foot of dead tree. So in a cloud of blue smoke we hitches Dear John our tractor tractor which for some inexplicable inexplicable reason we did not sell at our Farm Auction back in '79 by chain to the demised conifer. With several grunts and groans, - mostly by ourselves, ourselves, we managed to tug the offender from its moorings moorings like an impacted wisdom wisdom tooth leaving an unsightly unsightly gap in the landscape, punctuated with tree roots from the late deceased. After filling the gapping maw with top soil we come to the conclusion that it will now take at least 4 trees to even remotely cover its nakedness. nakedness. So being a man of action and following considerable considerable insistent prodding from our Interior and Exterior Exterior Designer we do what any prudent husband does, - we succumb to the domestic pressure. Next in line, we follow the words of wisdom of a local purveyor of nursery nursery stock - "When in a hustle, hustle, call Russel". So off to the Fisher Nursery and if Russel Russel doesn't give a free tree for all this free advertising, we shall lose our faith in humanity. humanity. So to bring a long pointless story to a dull conclusion conclusion we purchased 4 trees. To the uninitiated the planting of a tree should be a quick simple exercise. Dig a hole and drop the dam thing in, you say. Not so. With the little woman leaning leaning over our shoulder providing providing instruction, blow by blow, after 2-3 hours the task is complete. Got to admit they look a heck of a lot better than if we had been left to our own devices. But since "our time is worth nothing^ all's well that ends well. We do our thing for Earth Day and add an extra or two by cleaning our our fingernails and au- dile cavities ( ears that is). But back to the original text of this column. There are many special days on our calendar starting at New Years followed by Hang-over day - Burns Day for the Scots Jan. 25 - followed followed by another Hangover day. Groundhog day in February February and the celebration of Wiarton Willie. St. Patrick's day for the Irish (followed by another even bigger Hangover Hangover day). It came as a real iron St. Patrick was not an Irishman Irishman at all but was actually born in Scotland and he earned himself a pretty good, of bad reputation as a snake-chaser. Always .figured .figured it would take a strong Scotsman to keep all those Irishmen in line. Onto April - "All Scribes day - better know as April Fools Day." But of all the special days there is none to compare with Mother's Day. Everyone Everyone should have at least one mother - 2 or 3 is better. Who else would put up with all the inane things we do and still be proud of us nevertheless. nevertheless. Kiss our bruises when we were kids and in general lavish love and affection affection on us whether we deserve deserve it or not.At the risk of getting either sunburnt or frost bitten we take hats off to the cream of the crop - "Mothers"!
