14 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 22,1991 Their Business has Grown for 30 Years by Andrea Adair Economic conditions, trends and lifestyles may change but one thing never will: People always appreciate appreciate flowers. "It always puts a smile on someone's face to receive ! flowers," said Carl Van Belle, of Van Belle Floral ' and Plant Shoppe. He and his family know the flower industry well. This year marks their 30th anniversary of operation in the Durham Region. "The people of the area have always been very good to us. I always felt the peo- id ' pie treated us-fairly and we treated them fairly and that makes , for a good business environment,"he said. The Van Belle business started in Courtice where Van Belle's Floral and Plant Shoppe is currently located. Carl's parents, Harry and Ado, and his grandparents, William and Martha, started started a landscaping and evergreen evergreen business and eventually eventually moved into cut flowers and box plants. The business flourished. There are now two stores in Oshawa and another shop in Whitby. "They all originated from here," Carl said. Along with the new stores, other avenues of the business have grown as well. Two years ago, the company company started to sell their flowers wholesale to stores as far east as Kingston and north to the Peterborough/ Lindsay area. Their flowers are bought directly from growers from all over the world. Some of the places where Van Belles Durham Firm is Exporting to USA The "Durham Exporting Initiative," a year-long program program created last summer to help twenty-four Dur- ham-area businesses learn the ins and outs of exporting, exporting, -- has a success story to share. Specialty Paper Products Products Limited, a manufacturer manufacturer of specialized envelopes and file folders for the medical medical market, and a participant participant in the program, is exporting exporting to the United States marketplace. Ray Richardson, President President of the Ajax-based Specialty Specialty Paner, formerly of Bowmanville, identified the states of New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan as his prime markets. These states represent a potential market of 50,000,000 people, contrasted to the Ontario market of 7,000,000 people. Specialty Paper has been exporting since January of this year. The company expects expects to initially capture a - small percentage snare of the large market for X-ray envelopes and file folders for the health care field. His primary customers are hospitals hospitals and community clinics. clinics. The Durham Exporting Initiative, sponsored by the Federal Business Development Development Bank (FBDB), confirmed confirmed much of the initial export marketing plan information information he developed. Export market plans define such things as: the number of potential potential clients in the target market; the competition in the marketplace; the method used in the selling process; labelling requirements and components of a "free-on- board" price (ie: the final selling price at the destination destination including duty," brokerage, brokerage, storage, freight, exchange, exchange, etc.). Richardson took the opportunity opportunity to meet with Canadian Canadian Consulate and United United States Customs officials, and visited the marketplace, first-hand, as a participant in the New Exporter to Border Border States (NEBS) program. Participation led to meetings meetings with several potential clients, helped identify four major competitors, determine determine the proper tariff classification classification of his product going into the U.S. and address his own strengths and weaknesses weaknesses in terms of exporting. ilowefs originate are Holland, Holland, Colombia, Kenya, Thailand, New Zealand and Tenerife. "It gives us an edge when we buy directly from -the grower," he said, explaining that there is no middle man to hold the flowers for 2 or 3 days. The result is better quality flowers. They also purchase their stock from the Niagara Peninsula Peninsula where growers specialize specialize in one product. This again results in better better quality, more variety of goods and better shipping and delivery. The stores are open year- round, although the box plant season is usually for 6- 8 weeks in the spring.
