y r 14 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. May 29,1991 Gravel Company Plants Trees Near Mosport Pit A once-abandoned gravel ,J ' pit near Orono is being .transformed. into a healthy ' mixed forest. The transformation transformation is the result of a massive tree-planting effort "/being undertaken this '/month by Dufferin Aggregates Aggregates which is planting more ; .than 15,000 seedlings on the " site north of Newcastle. J - ' Eight,, species of seedlings, seedlings, from spruce trees to .'/ '.Olive bushes, will take root Mn the former gravel pit //'which Dufferin purchased '"more than four years ago. ""/The 15-hectare pit is located' /on Mosport Rd. south of Re- /'gional Road 20, eight kilo- "/'metres north of Orono. T;, "Although Dufferin has '"never taken anything out of t this pit, we want to give "'something back to the local /'.Community," says Paul Cut- " more, project co-ordinator //for Dufferin Aggregates. "In ; l *'the future, this site could : 1 provide habitat for wildlife ,"■> ànd it could also have an even greater role as a recreational recreational area." Area Boy Scouts are al- c feady using the land as a /' temporary camp. That camp //Could become permanent /' once the tree-planting and j .'other rehabilitation work is //completed. / "It's the perfect recrea- " tional area," says Cutmore. "The hills are great for j' 1 learning to ski and there's a '//nice pond on the site. The headwaters of Wilmot Creek _,also run through the proper- /' ty and the stream offers ""great trout fishing." The tree-planting project began in early May. Several thousand more trees will be planted this fall and over the next two to three years. The seedlings planted range in size from 20 centimetres centimetres to just under a metre and include 500 Silver Maple, Maple, 300 Carolina Poplar, 2.000 White Cedar, 4,000 Black Locust, 1.000 Green Ash, 1,000 Russian Olive bushes, ' 3,000 Scotch Pine, 3.000 Red Pine and 1,500 Russian Olive bushes. * Three hundred and fifty metre-high spruce and pine trees are also being planted on the north slope of the pit. For Cutmore, the treeplanting treeplanting marks a major step forward in the rehabilitation program which Dufferin Aggregates Aggregates is pursuing at many of the pits and quarries quarries which the company operates operates across the province. "Our goal is to return our sites to nature and provide a new use that benefits both the environment and. the local local community," Cutmore says. "The work we're doing at our pit number three near Mosport is a learning experience experience for all of us," says Cutmore. Cutmore. "Tree-planting is a science science unto itself and it's been a real team effort with the Ministry of Natural Resources. Resources.
