Round Three In Butt Battle Smokers Re: Butt - al Re: Kelly Adams re- ■ sponse to my letter. First ana foremost, I did do my homework. All of my information was obtained from a wide variety of people; people; smokers and non- smokers alike. As for health care cost being many times greater than the tobacco tax collected, I beg to differ. " As we've all learned just recently, we are paying $4.38 on each pack. Multiply that by 6.4 million Canadians Canadians wno smoke. The average Canadian smokes one pack per day. That's over 25 million million dollars per day! Unless I see documented proof I'll never believe that much is spent on health care for smokers., I'd like to know how all these figures are reached about how much is spent on smokers health care cost. I know I have never never been asked or interviewed. interviewed. Nor have any of the people I know. Don't think for a minute that smokers aren't aware of the health risks. We are not ignorant. However, we should be given thé choice. As far as whether smoking smoking is socially acceptable or not, that is debatable. It is not acceptable to a non- smoker. However, to a smoker, smoker, it is perfectly acceptable. Likewise for being medically acceptable. To non-smoking medical personnel it is not acceptable. To the smoking medical personnel it is. I work within the Health Care System, and I see first hand the number of smokers within it. Again, it's a matter of choice. .That is the point I'm trying to make. I do not wish to be judged, chastised, financially punished or looked down on anymore, because because I choose to smoke. Furiously Puffing, Jeannine Winter.
