4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, June 5,1991 Forthcoming Marriage Speaker Delivers United Way Word Graduates by Laura J. Richards Even someone who considers considers himself to be "just a well dressed janitor" knows there is more to life than just surviving on a day-to- day basis. "It's great to be alive," exclaimed exclaimed Mike Ambler, guest speaker at the weekly Bowmanville Bowmanville Rotary Club, at the Flying Dutchman on Thursday, Thursday, May 30. Mr. Ambler is the Vice-President and General General Partner of Swish Maintenance Maintenance Ltd. and an ex- director of the Oshawa- Whitby-Newcastle United Way. One of the best things about being alive is living in Canada where things are not as bad as they could be. Doug and Jacky Shannik wish to announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Janice Elaine to Scott Douglas, son of Allin and Shirley Cole. The wedding will take place at St. John's Anglican Church in Bowmanville, on September 21, 1991. George and Rudy Hoekstra of Bowmanville are pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Jacqueline Helene to Cornelius Henry, son of Peter and Bep Vande Pol of Whitby. Town Clerk Town of Newcastle 40 Temperance Street Bowmanville, Ontario L1C3A6 Date of Publication: April 3,1991 File: 10.50.8 People helping people is one of the good things about Canada, said Mr. Ambler. The United Way is one of the ways people can help other people. "There are lots of worthwhile worthwhile charities out there. And it's easy to give and support the agencies you know." Reflecting on the many different types of agencies helping with community work one has to ask oneself: 'why I should support an agency I know nothing about?' Mr. Ambler believes that no one should make a donation donation to an agency that is not known to the donor. Giving to the United Way is different. The United Way is an umbrella for many different community-related agencies which help many people on a daily basis. Groups like Meals-on- Wheels, said Mr. Ambler, take hot meals to his inlaws. inlaws. And, when he first moved to Oshawa from Peterborough, Peterborough, he first became involved with the YMCA Men's Basketball team. Later Later on, he took his children to the "Y" to learn how to swim. These are the groups in the community that the United Way supports. Last year the United Way needed $3 million to make sure every group got what it needed to provide for its programs. programs. The campaign fund received 97 per cent of the goal. This year, the United Way will again attempt to put together a $3 million campaign. This year, will be harder, though, said Mr. Ambler. There is another factor to take in account: The Oshawa General Hospital building fund-drive. Over the years, the employees employees at General Motors have been raising about 50 per cent of the funds needed by the United Way. This year, though, Mr. Ambler said, the employees are raising raising money for the building fund. He is sure this will put a dent into the United Way's campaign year. But,'still the volunteers are going to give it all they can to raise the money needed needed for thé worthwhile cause. One of the things that just might help, though, are more employee campaigns to raise money and awareness for the United Way, Mr. Ambler Ambler concluded. hospital THE SENSIBLE APPROACH TO WEIGHT CONTROL \.
