Winners Chosen in Cancer Soc. Poster Contest Every year during April, which is Cancer Month, the Bowmanville Unit of the Cancer Society conducts a poster contest for students in grade 7 and 8. Meeting Members of the Northumberland and Newcastle Women Teachers' Association who received promotions this year were recognized during the association's annual spring tea held at St. Paul's United Church earlier in the month. We at the Newcastle Family Resource Centre, that is planned for the Southhaven Nursing Home or the Newcastle Multicare Centre as it is known as, are trying to design a facility for all children, to be supervised, cared for and kept busy through programming to enable them to have something productive to do. Children need contact with adults and seniors during recreation or play time and I think at times we all get so busy with our own lives that we forget about that. We have many worthwhile worthwhile programs in Durham Region but due to the lack of available transportation our youth arc limited, we need to bring these programs to our community. We are in the re-zoning phase of our project, but have the energy to move quickly once this zoning is approved in order to hopefully have our programs programs in place by the loll. Wo can create a centre for families, youth, children, and our seniors making this a community whore children arc "more" than a nuisance and yes it will also create jobs for our students or young adults, assisting others. others. No. the Town isn't doing it, but we are trying. trying. For 1 1/2 years a group of concerned area mothers have been working on establishing establishing a family resource centre. We have preschoolers and that is where we plan to begin. We more than welcome welcome people who care about kids, to start programs for other age groups as part of the centre. And guess what??? If all goes well and rezoning is approved on June 17 we will have a building to operate out of. The Newcastle Family Resource building in Newcastle Newcastle Village which was bought by Kinrow Investments Investments to lease to community groups such as ours - The Newcastle Family Resource Centre, YWCA infant to school age daycare plus many more community oriented programs. But residents residents must realize that if they want programs they will have to work with us - don't expect us to do it all - get involved - meet other people - it's rewarding and even fun. We discussed driving safely with tractors and the use of international symbols on machinery. Starting up procedures were demonstrated. Our third meeting was held at Alan Rickard's farm on June 4. We talked about power take-offs, gear boxes and jacks. We observed several several engines and discussed the differences between air and liquid cooled engines. M & M Meat Shop held their first Charity Day, with proceeds going to the Canadian Foundation for Ileitis and Colitis on Saturday, June 15, in Bowmanville. Bowmanville.
