Malcolm We have just received word that a former resident of our community and a former former public school colleague of ours recently passed away. We refer to the late Carman P. Wright who died May 27/91 at the Niagara General Hospital following a massive stroke three days earlier. Carman was the youngest son of the late Richard and Bertha Wright • and last surviving member of their family, which included included Reverend George, Ernest, Ernest, Wilbur and sister Luel- la, all predeceased. He leaves a wife Joan of Niagara Niagara Falls, a son Rick, Sharon, Lynne and Robert and four grandchildren. We recall Carman as a jovial, rotund individual whose number one priority was not a strong desire to acquire an education. education. We also remember that he had the best bob-sled of all the children complete with a steering wheel that would go faster and further than any others down Yelverton Yelverton lull. Needless to say this mad Carman a very popular fellow - particularly in winter time. Sympathy is extended to all those who mourn his passing. Our gratitude to his sister-in-law Ada Wright of Lindsay for passing along the sad news. The Wright family lived just east of Yelverton at the foot of Yelverton Hill for many years and were very active in our Church and community community activities in earlier days. If you think you're seeing things or have suddenly been transferred to a former era, cool your jets ifyou happen happen to see a 1938 Plymouth coming down the road in its original condition. It's the real thing. Howard and Eileen Eileen Malcolm now have their vintage automobile "on the road again" and looking real good. It was our pleasure on Friday afternoon to represent represent Manvers Township Council at the Bethany Hills Girls Schools annual closing Commencement. (The school is located North of Bethany.) Must admit that as the sun beamed down full strength during the academic awards as I sat and squirmed and perspired, I kept asking myself, myself, "What am I here for?" without getting any satisfactory satisfactory answers. Actually, it was a pretty good show except except I didn't know a darned soul except the Headmistress Headmistress Mrs. Janis Smith. We were surprised that many of the girl students are from a variety of foreign countries. We were pleased to see that this year a new award was added paying tribute to the late Ivan Pollard, a generous generous benefactor to the project project who passed way suddenly suddenly a month ago. Dr. Liz Ashton, Vice President of Academics at Sir Sandford Fleming College, provided a few words of worldlj in her conf marks to classes. The weather was ideal which contributed to the increased attendance over the past two years who came in an orderly procession procession from 4:30 till 7:30 with no long waiting periods . Although Although the first course was very satisfactory, we suspect that it was the tasty array of desserts that bring back the customers year after year. As per usual, almost everyone everyone in our community dug in to make the event a success -- even the youngsters were cleaning off dirty dishes and the oldsters (that's anyone 5 years older than me) were doing the sedentary jobs. We express the gratitude of our community to all those who attended or helped in any way to make it a success. Several from our Yelverton Yelverton community attended the Grand Opening of the new Janetville Fire Hall on Sat. at 1 p.m. The weatherman cooperated in providing a bright sunny day, even if the heat ana humidity were somewhat oppressive under the midday sun. Quite a large array of dignitaries were present on tne occasion: occasion: - representatives of the Fire Marshall's office and neighbouring municipalities of Lindsay-Ops, Mariposa, the Fire Chief for Manvers Twsp. John Horsleri. Our M.P.P. Mr. Gordon Mills, Bethany Chief Matt Mueller, Mueller, Manvers Reeve Barry Pickering and Councillors and Fire Committee members members Harvey Malcolm and Dave Marsh, and last but not least Janetville Chief Lavern Wright. Fireman Ted (Red) Bryant conducted the Opening ceremonies in his own inimitable style with lots of gusto and freedom freedom of speech. Speech making making was limited to the bare minimum - to the delight of those in attendance. Chief John .Horslen made a few perfunctory remarks and congratulated the Janetville Fire Chief Lavern Wright and his supporting cast of fireman ana their wives for doing such a fine job of fixing fixing up their new fire hall. Our Yelverton community community which is served by the Janetville Brigade extend congratulations to the volunteers volunteers not only for their new 3-bay fireball but also for the hours and days spent on the various aspects of its preparation. It is dangerous to pick out any individuals in such a large cooperative enterprise, but from reports provided, Ted Bryant deserves deserves hugh marks for his motivating influence. Of interest interest to many is the fact that the Wright family has made a vast contribution to the development of fire protection protection in the Janetville area. The late Melvin Wright was a main instigator instigator of the formation of tne first modest Fire Hall in Janetville which served for over 20 years in that capacity. capacity. The current Janetville Fire Chief, Mel's son Levem, has carried on the tradition as he recently was appoint ed Deputy Fire Chief of Manvers Township to coordinate coordinate the efforts of the Bethany and Pontypool Brigade. Brigade. A third generation continues the family tradition tradition with Lawrence Wright a member of the local brigade. brigade. In the near future Matt Meuller, Bethany Fire Chief will soon be accepting delivery delivery of a new Fire Truck for Bethany dept, to replace the current worn out vehicle. Pontypool also has an up-to- date Fire truck and also a very active volunteer fire brigade. Both Bethany and Pontypool fire stations require require future improvements to their facilities if they are going to continue to provide the same exemplary services we have become accustomed to. Unfortunately all these improvements require additional additional tax dollars -- which are pretty hard to come by 1 in the current economic times. We are pleased to report that Mr. Maurice Nesbitt is recovering satisfactorily from having a knee joint replaced replaced in a Peterboro Hospital Hospital last week. Best wishes for a continued speedy convalescence. convalescence. Yes-siree we goofed again! In our recent report of a wedding we got the wrong brother. Rotary Club Welcomes Guest Speaker The weather was hot, but that didn't stop Marion Wiseman from visiting, for the first time in 1991, her favorite museum on Heritage Day. She was among guests attending a special "seniors day" event sponsored ny Community Care and the Bowmanville Museum. Here, Curator Charles Taws shows Mrs. Wiseman, the first curator at the museum, the newly-renovated kitchen. Earl McDermid, president of Earl C. McDermid Limited, was the guest speaker at the June 20 meeting of the Bowmanville Rotary Club. Mr. McDermid talked about the many changes which have occurred in the business world since 1945. "I think if we continue on the path we are on today, we will not be able to afford all of the good things we have become accustomed to and take for granted," he said. The speaker discussed possible ways of making Canada more competitive in the world marketplace. One of his suggestions is to allow students leaving school to spend some time as trainees at various industries so that they can gain some experience and decide on a career which really interests them.
