8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, July 17,1991 Ball Hockey Lge. Results On Sunday, July 14, the Bowmanville Youth Ball Hockey League completed its fourth year of operation. It was a record year, with a registration of 145. It was also a veiy disappointing season for the organizers and coaches of the senior division division with as few as six players showing up for games, when all four teams had an 18-man roster. The Junior division had the same numbers on each of their teams, but excellent attendance throughout the schedule provided some very entertaining games. In the Senior Division, the Knights outscored the Generals 9-5 to win the Consolation Consolation Championship. The Spitfires against the Wolves was probably ' the wmm r -ïWZW §8 I «* 1 B 8 most exciting game of the day, with the Wolves grabbing grabbing a 6-5 O/T victory. In the Senior Division, the fourth place Whalers upset upset the second place Flames 5-4 in the opening game, while the Kings, with strong goal tending, hung on to defeat defeat the Penguins, 4-3. The Flames suffered their second upset of the day and were defeated by the Penguins, 6-2, in the Consolation Consolation Championship. The Kings captured the championship in a one-sided affair, 10-1, over the Whalers. Whalers. All teams received medallions medallions and team hats, as well as pop and hot dogs throughout the day. As always, special thanks to our sponsors: Royal Cana dian Legion, Bowmanville Sports Shop, The Dug Out, T-Mac Insulation. The organizers, coaches, referees and timekeepers have once again made this short season a successful one. Those who registered for ball hockey last spring and failed to show up for more than 50% of the games made it very disappointing to their teammates, coaches, managers managers and league organizers who spend many volunteer hours at the start of each season with registration, putting teams together, getting getting sponsors ana sweaters. So, for the upcoming season, if you're not willing to make the commitment, please do not register. The Kings won the Senior Championship after a lopsided 10-1 win over the Whalers. Terry MacDonald Misses Wall in Scary 360° Spin Junior Hanley Wins Bud 100 at Mosport Some may say good driving. driving. Some may say good luck. But MacDonald says Guardian Angels when it comes to describing Saturday's Saturday's race, the fourth Firestone Firestone Firehawk race at Mea- dowlands, New Jersey. This was a support race in conjunction with PPG Indy CART Series. MacDonald and Crew Chief Cadieux left for the Meadowlands on Thursday at 6:00 p.m., and arrived at registration in New Jersey at 6:30 a.m. Friday. Waiting for registration to open, they were informed that they had only 20 minutes to get across the track,, or would not be able to get into the pits. Once inside the Meadow- land 1.2 mile road course, MacDonald made her way to the PPG Pace Cars, where she was offered a ride from fellow team members. "Alice Ridpath took me out and we spent the next 20 minutes studying the course. The walls didn't seem as dangerous as I had envisioned. I actually felt sort of comfortable on the track after my instruction," said MacDonald. MacDonald, although exhausted, exhausted, worked op her technique and speed during the next two practice sessions. sessions. It was decided she would skip the 4:30 p.m. practice. The officials changed the 4:30 p.m. practice to a qualifying qualifying session, due to the fact that rain was in the forecast for Saturday. MacDonald pulled whatever whatever strength she had in her to qualify the Ultra Slim- Fast MacTools Camaro 10th in her class. She would start 12th overall on the grid. Saturday came, and so did the rain. As the 3:00 p.m. start got closer, the rain stopped and the track began to ary. The judgement call had to be made. Do we start on rain tires or race tires? Half of the field was on diys and the others were on rains. While sitting on the mock grid, we decided to change tires. The officials said we had 10 minutes. MacDonald ran the entire race by herself without any scratches or bruises, and was able to keep it off the walls during an incredible spin. "I was coming into the Schakane a little too fast and locked up my brakes. The next thing I knew ,1 was in a full 360° spin," recalled MacDonald. "I started to Soccer Standings drive away but couldn't turn close enough to get around the wall and had to back up." "As I was almost around the wall, another car came speeding to the corner. I could have been hit and crushed, but I put my foot to the floor and spun the car around just in the nick of time and saved what could have been a very nasty crash." The race finally came to an end and the Ultra Slim- Fast MacTool Camaro was in one piece, with no dents. MacDonald finished the race ninth in the class, and 13th overall. It was a great race for all the drivers. Now MacDonald is on to the Molson Indy in Toronto as a PPG Pace Car Driver. Fast Action At Mosport by Nelson Hudes The weather was perfect, the huge crowd feverish, the cars awesome, and the racing racing action spectacular as Mosport International Speedway hosted the Bud 250 Weekend. There were crashes, spins, blown engines, and even a car hanging upside down on the front straightaway. straightaway. In a race that had eight cautions in total, Junior Hanley of Campbellville. Ontario, (driving a Ford Thundcrbird) dominated the 100 lap race from laps 1-69 while holding back the likes of Rollie MacDonald from Pictou, N.S., who charged after after him most of the race and, in a spectacular pass, grabbed the lead on lap 70 and held it to lap 92. Hard on the heels of MacDonald MacDonald was another MacDonald, MacDonald, Oshnwa's , own Randy, who stayed with the leaders for most of the race. With seven laps to go. Junior Hanley decided he'd lmd enough of playing second second fiddle, grabbed the load back and held on to it to win the race.
