Durham Complex Barbecue With dark threatening clouds, the Durham Complex Complex Sr. Citizens began to wonder if we could hold our ' club barbecue outside or not, on Thursday evening, August August 15. However, the storm waited until the last tasty hamburger and hot dogs were devoured and then broke loose! Gales of wind and lashing rain drove the crowd inside for entertainment. entertainment. • Lots of good musical fun, sing-songs etc. were really enjoyed by most of our crowd. We did feel sorry for those folks who hurried home to escape the rain, as they sure missed a good time. Music from Sonny Dobson Dobson on her trusty accordion got the old toes tapping and hands clapping, and were all enjoyed her newest rendition rendition from "Fiddler on The Roof". Now, our own pianist Gladys Brown, Peterborough Peterborough joined in with Sonny and the music really rolled! and then Gladys gave us some of her old favorites along with her solos. Altogether Altogether a real fun time for all! Our barbecue consisted of hot-dogs, hamburgers, salads, salads, relishes, tea, coffee, cookies, ice-cream and fresh peaches. This is an annual event looked forward to by all members. Our crowd consisted consisted of about 60 in attendance. attendance. Beef Barbecue 24th Annual Again a large crowd of 456 in attendance at the annual annual roast-beef barbecue, held Wednesday, August 14, in our beautiful Orono Park. This annual event is always always popular and as usual sponsored by the hard working working Improvement Committee Committee of our local arena. As usual the delicious menu of roast beef, with head chef Stirling Mather in charge, roast potatoes, cabbage cabbage salad, succulent beans, drinks and dozens of delicious delicious donuts for dessert, served a hungry crowd. A rather generous sprinkling sprinkling of politicians and would-be politicians to be seen at these public affairs! Oh, well we will sure get used to it before the election time rolls around. During the dinner hour, we all enjoyed the good old time music by our famous "Orono Fiddle Club". Those taking part in music - James and Doreen Lowery, Norman Norman Andrews, Barbara Shelter, Auto-harp, Wendell Tremeer, Ed Langlois, Ray Brison, John McKeegan and Brian Caswell. Memories On Sunday, August 18, several from Orono journeyed journeyed out to Pontypool Cemetery Cemetery to place flowers on graves of loved ones. Imagine my surprise when we suddenly realized we'd played together 60 years ago! As two little girls we'd enjoyed a tea-party with cookies and pretend tea! Orono suffered several power shut-offs last week, with trees falling over power lines. Sure tied up our bank, with computers all down. Her efforts paid off because her art work will be shown at the Orono Fair in September along with other entries from the Visual Arts Centre. Bowmanville High School graduate, Paul Tukkér, was one of five winners in the 31st annual Goodyear Bursary Program. Each of the recipients will receive full payment of their college or university tuition, plus a $400 book allowance allowance for three years or until graduation. The students students must, however, maintain certain scholastic requirements. requirements. The Goodyear bursaries are offered to children of Goodyear associates across Canada. Selection of the winners is based on academic results achieved in the secondary school program, as well as other extracurricular extracurricular activities. Paul is the son of Ralph Tukker, manager of quality assurance at the Goodyear plant in Bowmanville. He will be attending Queen's University in Kingston Kingston this fall to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree.
