The children's summer reading program and the Eager Readers' Club at the Bowmanville Branch have produced some new found readers as well as bringing back some old ones. In fact, this year, there has been a considerable increase increase in the number of children children registered in both reading reading programs. • . "There were approximately approximately 120 kids, aged 8-10, in the summer reading program," said Maria Politano, the community services librarian. librarian. "That's more than we had last year." The Newcastle Village Branch had about the same number. Appropriately named "Munch a Good Book," the theme of this year's reading club was food. . Children's activity programmer, programmer, Janet Van der Veen, met with the club every every Wednesday morning for six weeks. Together, they discussed different books and what they were about. Janet also gave the kids suggestions as to what books to read. "The discussions were f ood because kids like to now what's enjoyable before before they read it," said Ms Politano. "They don't like to waste time reading something something they aren't going to like" What's more, the children became familiar with how the library works. "I tried to teach them how to use the computer terminal terminal and then how to find the book they wanted from there," said Ms Van der Veen. This year was the first for having regular meetings for the club. It worked out so well, that they plan on continuing next year, said Ms Politano. The Eager Readers club has been equally successful this year. This program is designed to give children, in grades one to three, extra practice in reading. The reader is paired up with a volunteer, usually aged 13 and over, and the two read to one another. Ms Politano feels this is à- good way of encouraging kids to read. "The reader and the volunteer volunteer work together -- one on one," she said. "They're close in age, so they form a good bond with\ one another." "And the reader doesn't feel intimidated," she added. Furthermore, Christina Watters, program coordinator coordinator for Eager Readers, said she tries to match the personalities of reader and volunteer. "I want them to be able to get along as well as possible," possible," she added. Christina keeps track of how many books each pair reads during each one-and- a-half hour session every Thursday. "Our record is 107 books among 24 pairs," she noted. The dedication and commitment commitment of both reader and volunteer have made the program a success, commented commented Ms Politano. And the response from teachers and parents is proof of its success. "We've received a lot of comments on how much some of the kids have learned," she said. "It's been really great." ■' - Mandy Dykstra, 15, (centre) listens attentively ne Y read at the final meeting of the Eager Readers while eight-year-old, Jordan Cabral and Jolene Pen- club last Friday at the Bowmanville Library. In addition to being a valuable valuable asset on a resume, volunteer volunteer experience, gives kids a sense of accomplishment, accomplishment, said Ms Politano. Plus, it gives kids who aren't working, something worthwhile to do during the. summer. The Newcastle Public Library Library hasn't forgotten adults either. Adult reading programs usually begin in September or October and vary each year. "We tiy to find out what the public needs to know and then set up programs to fulfill those needs and interests," interests," said Ms Politano. This October, there will be a three-part series concerning concerning the law, at the Bowmanville Bowmanville Branch. Speakers will address issues issues of young offenders, family law and wills. Registration may be done at the Bowmanville branch. Past programs have included included woodworking sessions, sessions, and canning and preserving. preserving. "We try to appeal to the community by offering programs programs of current interest," Ms Politano said. "We also want to be as flexible as possible. We are very open to ideas from the public, she added.
